16th annual Relay For Life sets a goal of $155,000 for 2012
NORWICH – Relay For Life of Chenango County will kick-off its 16th annual campaign against cancer from 5:30 to 7 tonight in the Morrisville State College Norwich Campus community room, 20 Conkey Ave.
According to event chair Marie DeSarro, the open house and informational meeting will showcase the many different aspects of Relay, including how to start up and register a team, how to purchase and sell luminaries and some tips on running a successful fundraising campaign.
“Once again this year, we’ve already heard from some of our major fundraising teams that, unfortunately, will not be returning,” said DeSarro. “A team doesn’t have to be huge – it can be a group of friends or family, a set of co-workers or a church group.”
The Relay committee will also be reaching out to a number of local businesses and organizations, added DeSarro, to gauge their interest in forming a team. In recent years, the committee has seen an increase in online fundraising teams, as well.
“They may not be able to come down and spend the night with us at the fairgrounds, but they can still register their team and team members online, and do some virtual fundraising,” said DeSarro. “All donations are welcome and accepted, no matter how people decide to raise them.”
This year’s Relay will feature a fairy tale theme, with a motto of “And They Lived Happily Ever After ... Cancer Free!” And with a goal of $155,000, it’s more important than ever for teams to get started as soon as possible with their fundraising efforts, said DeSarro.
“We’re asking once again for our community to step-up and help us continue the great tradition we have here in Chenango County of raising funds toward ending cancer,” she added. “Every year it seems like people do more and more and we can’t thank them enough. The hard work, creativity and dedication to this cause has been overwhelming over the years ... we have some amazing leaders and supporters here.”
Every year – and every dollar raised through Relay – “brings us one step closer to a cure,” said DeSarro.
Relay For Life will be held on July 20 and 21 at the Chenango County Fairgrounds. For more information on Relay For Life of Chenango County visit relayforlife.org/chenangocountyny or contact DeSarro at 316-0763 or via e-mail at Relay.Chenango@gmail.com.
