Chenango grand jury indicts eight
NORWICH – The Chenango County Grand Jury met Wednesday and handed up a number of criminal indictments. At the proceeding, the Chenango County District Attorney’s Office presents evidence against those they wish to prosecute. It is up to the jury to decide if there is enough reasonable cause to charge a person with a felony offense.
Those indicted by the grand jury are arraigned before the county or Supreme Court judge at a later date.
The grand jury indicted eight individuals:
• Austin R. Demuth, 17, Oxford, was indicted on counts of third degree criminal mischief, a class E felony, and fourth degree criminal mischief, a class A misdemeanor, following an alleged incident which took place on or about Nov. 24, 2011, in the Town of Smithville Flats. Demuth is accused of breaking the driver’s side window of a 2010 Ford vehicle with a hammer at Roger’s Auto Body, 5362 State Highway 41.
• Richard A. Terrell, 26, Afton, was indicted on counts of second and third degree arson, class B and C felonies respectively, and second degree obstructing governmental administration, a class A misdemeanor, following an alleged incident which took place on or about Dec. 23, 2011, in the Village of Afton. Terrell is accused of intentionally setting fire to a 23 South Main St. residence – occupied by two other individuals at the time – when he kicked over a kerosene heater. It’s also alleged that Terrell did intentionally obstruct, impair or prevent authorities from securing the fire through use of physical force when he twice attempted to re-enter the building.
• Kimberly A. Bishop, 35, Oxford, was indicted on charges of fourth degree grand larceny, a class E felony, and petit larceny, a class A misdemeanor, after an alleged incident which took place on or about Nov. 3, 2011, in the Town of Plymouth. Bishop is accused of stealing property – consisting of a three-stone diamond and gold band – from a 3395 State Highway 23 residence. The approximate value of the ring is $1,300, according to the indictment.
• Marvelous C. Williams, 24, Syracuse, was indicted on three counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class B felony, one count of tampering with physical evidence, a class E felony, and one count of seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class A misdemeanor. It’s alleged that Williams, on or about Jan. 16, 2012, in the Town of Norwich, did knowingly and unlawfully possess seven individually wrapped plastic baggies of the narcotic cocaine with an approximate weight of 15.05 grams and a total of 30 glassine envelopes of the narcotic heroin. It’s also alleged that Williams – in an attempt to hide the drugs – did intentionally place them in the rear pockets of the front and back seats of an unmarked police car.
• Matthew J. Gavazzi, 42, Smithville, was indicted on counts of aggravated driving while intoxicated and driving while intoxicated, both class E felonies, following an alleged incident which occurred on or about Oct. 28, 2011, on County Road 3 in the Town of Smithville. Gavazzi is accused of operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content of .24 of 1 percent, three times the legal limit. It’s also alleged that Gavazzi was observed swaying while he walked, speaking with a slurred voice, having bloodshot and watery eyes, and smelling strongly of alcohol at the time of his arrest. Gavazzi has a previous conviction for driving while intoxicated, dating from June 24, 2004 in the Town of Greene Court, according to the indictment.
• Jeremy M. Sawyer, 35, Norwich, was indicted on charges of first degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a class E felony, and driving while intoxicated, a class A misdemeanor, following an alleged incident which took place on or about Jan. 8, 2012, on County Road 23 in the Town of North Norwich. It’s alleged that Sawyer did unlawfully operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol while knowing – or having reason to know – that his NYS driver’s license was revoked or suspended. It’s also alleged that Sawyer was observed swaying while he walked, speaking with a slurred voice, having bloodshot and watery eyes, and smelling strongly of alcohol at the time of his arrest.
• Charles F. Cahill, 43, Norwich, was indicted on charges of third degree burglary, a class D felony, fourth degree grand larceny, a class E felony, and petit larceny, a class A misdemeanor. It’s alleged that Cahill, on or about Feb. 4, 2012, did knowingly enter and unlawfully remain in a building with the intent to commit a crime. Cahill is accused of breaking into the St. Bartholomew’s Parish Center where he allegedly stole a Dell Studio XPS computer – including its attachments – and a DVD player. The approximate value of the stolen goods is $1,220, according to the indictment.

Meeker, Jr., 30, Bainbridge, was indicted on charges of first degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and driving while intoxicated – both class E felonies – following an alleged incident which took place on or about Jan. 22, 2012, on State Highway 235 in the Town of Coventry. Meeker is accused of unlawfully operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol while knowing – or having reason to know – that his NYS driver’s license was revoked or suspended. It’s also alleged that Sawyer was observed swaying while he walked, speaking with a slurred voice, having bloodshot and watery eyes, and smelling strongly of alcohol at the time of his arrest. Meeker has a previous conviction for driving while ability impaired, dating from Dec. 14, 2005, in the Town of Coventry Court.
