SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville avoided a second straight first-round Section III tournament exit turning back General Brown Friday night in Class B play.
General Brown, down eight points to start the fourth, hit two free throws with less than two minutes to play to take a 49-47 lead over the Marauders.
S-E (15-4) remained poised, and worked the ball to sophomore Jordan Van Althuis, who drained her fourth three ball of the game pushing her club back in front. Following a defensive stop of General Brown, Sierra Morris canned a long jumper for the final margin.
“(General Brown) certainly had the momentum in the fourth, but our kids stayed composed, and we hit two big shots at the end,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan. “To come through at this time of the year with the game on the line, I hope this helps us for the next game.”
Van Althuis had a game-high 20 points. Cassie Beaver finished with a double-double scoring 15 points and pulling down 10 boards. Point guard Briana Vibbard did not score, but picked up nine steals and handed out 10 assists.
The Marauders will play the winner of Jordan-Elbridge or Skaneateles at a neutral site this week in the B-2 semifinals.

OTEGO – In third-fourth place consolation game of the Midstate Athletic Conference Tournament, Unatego bounced back from its semifinals loss to Oxford producing one of its best offensive games of the season.
After a slow start, Unatego outscored the Bobcats 38-20 over the middle two periods en route to a comfortable win.
Casey Manzanero led the Spartans with 19 points, and five other players scored at least six points.
B-G’s top two scorers, Randi Conway and Shania Vandermark, were limited to 11 total points. The high-scoring duo tallied around 26 combined points per game this season.
Conway finished with nine and Abbey Smith netted eight in the loss.

Otselic Valley 65, McGraw 54
MCGRAW – Otselic Valley evened the score with McGraw this season, and eliminated the higher-seeded Eagles Friday night.
After beating McGraw early in the season, McGraw defeated the Vikes convincingly in the next two meetings using fast starts to establish command.
OV bucked that trend taking a nine-point lead at halftime, and never giving it up. “It was probalby the best game we’ve played all season as far as intensity, and decision making offensively,” said Vikings coach Dave Loomis. “It was a nice win for us against a pretty good basketball team.”
Gideon Schena scored 21 points in the victory, Mike Larkin and Trevor Marston netted 12 apiece, while Brandon Huntley and Jason Olin split 18 points down the middle.
OV meets Poland this week in the second round of the Section III Class D playoffs.
