Village ambulance ‘Friends’ to hold fundraiser Saturday
NEW BERLIN – The Friends of the New Berlin Ambulance Service will hold a fundraiser on Saturday at the New Berlin Fire House.
The fundraiser will include a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. and a bake sale and chicken barbecue at noon. There will also be multiple raffles throughout the day.
According to co-chair of the group and former village board member Robert Huot, the purpose of the event is to collect money for the NBAS, which reported a $54,000 deficit in the 2011 budget.
The village’s budget is currently less than $100,000, approximately $1,000 more than previous year’s despite the service becoming a 24 hour operation.
“The service went from 12-hour days to 24-hour days to provide more coverage,” said Huot. “But many things weren’t put together properly and there wasn’t a satisfactory budget.”
Village Mayor Terry Potter said the service would continue to provide the “same excellent service it had for the last four years” and said he’d work hard to improve the budget and get the service back into the black.
At a Feb. 9 board meeting, the Columbus town board voted against a one-year contract with the NBAS and instead chose to open negotiations with Cooperstown Medical Transport. According to the board, the decision was made in the interest of the town.
Supervisor Tom Grace, on the other hand, has thrown his support behind the NBAS, saying that the ambulance service has been a good “friend” to the town and deserves their support. He also said Columbus had paid for one third of the cost of the village’s ambulance and should continue to protect that investment.
“Often, in its district, the NBAS is first on the scene and has pledged this year to cover the West Edmeston fire district, which has not had legal local coverage since our town board allowed our Certificate of Need to lapse in 2010,” said Grace in an e-mail Monday. “There’s plenty more happening in the background, but the point of this [dinner] is chicken, cookies, pies, NBAS buttons and a small donor support to help friends in need, friends who answer when we call 911.”
The chicken barbecue will cost 6$ for a take out order and $8 for a sit down dinner. For more information, contact the village offices at 847-6389.
