Wlasiuk trial date rescheduled; new judge named

NORWICH – The trial of twice-convicted murderer Peter Wlasiuk has been rescheduled from April 30 to June 4 and a new judge has been named as the one-time Guilford resident prepares to plead his innocence once again.
This will be Wlasiuk’s third trial for the alleged murder of his wife, Patricia Wlasiuk, whose body was recovered from Guilford Lake in April of 2002, following what authorities have called a staged accident.
Broome County Judge Joseph Cawley has been reassigned to the case, replacing Broome County Judge Martin E. Smith, who oversaw Wlasiuk’s second trial, according to the Chenango County District Attorney’s Office.
Wlasiuk was first convicted of second degree murder – a class A-1 felony – in 2003 in connection with his wife’s death, a conviction that was overturned on appeal in 2006 due to errors regarding the admittance of prejudicial evidence. A second conviction, in 2008, once again sent Wlasiuk to state prison to serve a sentence of 25 years to life. In December of 2011, the New York State Supreme Court’s Appellate Division upheld a second appeal, this time on the grounds that Wlasiuk “received ineffective assistance of counsel” from his attorney at the time, Randel Scharf, according to a court memorandum.
Wlasiuk is accused of killing his wife at their Guilford residence, loading her body into his pick-up truck and then driving the truck into Guilford Lake in an attempt to cover up the crime.
The trial is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning June 4.
