Warmer temperatures foreshadow Chenango’s summer festivals

NORWICH – It may only be March, but warmer temperatures and light breezes bring Chenango County’s popular summertime festivals to mind, and sure enough, volunteers are already meeting and planning entertainment and educational activities.
And, as usual, event organizers are making application for New York State matching funds. According to Chenango County Tourism Director Audrey Robinson, $32,000 of “I Love NY” funds are available for 2012. The amount is just shy of last year’s take.
The festivals that will apply for and most likely receive I Love New York matching funds are: the 50th Annual General Clinton Canoe Regatta; the Afton Fair; the Chenango County Fair; the Chenango Blues Festival; and Colorscape Chenango. (See sidebar.) Various performances and educational programs at the Chenango County Council of the Arts, The Earlville Opera House and Six-on-the-Square in Oxford also receive financial support through the state matching funds program.
Robinson was scheduled to deliver her annual tourism report to county supervisors today. Using expenditures from 2010 (numbers aren’t available until the following year), the presentation will highlight that tourism is big business in Chenango County. Expenditures for 2010 were as follows:
• Lodging: $1,441,000
• Recreation: $603,000
• Food & Beverage: $5,560,000
• Retail & Service: $3,028,000
• Transportation: $1,254,000
• Second Homes: $16,445,000
Total: $28,371,000
The total projected impact for tourism dollars is far greater, however. Additional economic impacts on 2010 included:
• Labor income: $10,952
• Local taxes: $1,671,000
• State taxes: $1,759,000
• Employment: 505 direct and indirect jobs
Last summer was the first in the newly-renovated park for the now 18-year old summertime staple, Colorscape Chenango. Board President John Knapp said it was “a nice change.”
“We’re still tweaking the layout and musical presentation, but Colorscape is excited to be presenting the event for the second year in the new park system,” he said. Colorscape’s board will jury artists and food vendors in the coming weeks, keeping to its mission of allowing only quality fine art and cuisine exhibits.
Chenango County’s tourism office at Commerce Chenango is also planning two new events for summer: a wine festival on June 30 at the fairgrounds and a 5K race in September.
According to Robinson, tourism is the fifth largest private sector employer in the state based on direct employment. The industry is a combination of creating and retaining jobs, as well as providing the state and county with a return on its investment.
