Relay For Life 2012 team captains meeting tonight

NORWICH – The Chenango Relay For Life committee will hold a special Team Captains meeting at 5:30 tonight in the Morrisville State College Norwich Campus Community Room, 20 Conkey Ave., an opportunity for new teams and their respective captains to learn more about the 2012 Relay For Life, to be held July 20 at the Chenango County Fairgrounds.
According to Relay event co-chair Marie DeSarro, tonight’s meeting will include information on the role and responsibilities of a team captain; a brief, online tutorial on maneuvering and registering a team; and additional information on running a successful fundraising campaign.
Added DeSarro, “We’re gearing this toward new team captains, but all captains are welcome to attend ... sometimes it’s nice to have some of our ‘veterans’ there to help talk about their experiences and ideas.”
Last year’s Relay included more than 40 teams, and DeSarro said the committee is hoping to retain as many of those as possible in 2012 while adding at least five new teams. Teams can be made up of family members, friends, co-workers, businesses, youth groups, individuals, church groups or organizations, she added, anyone who’s willing to put in the time and effort to support the cause.
Last year’s Relay For Life brought in more than $155,000 for the fight against cancer.
“There is no limit to the number of people on your team,” stressed DeSarro. “All we ask is that everyone sets a fundraising goal for their team and for themselves. Reach out and ask family, friends, neighbors or co-workers. Set up donation bins around your office or send an e-mail out to ten friends. Many times, people don’t donate because no one asks them.”
There are currently 23 teams registered for the 2012 Relay, far more than the number of teams registered at this point last year, according to DeSarro. That alone, she added, speaks for the enthusiasm the event generates annually. This year, the Relay committee is challenging teams interested in participating to register online by April 1. Those who do so will be awarded points toward an end-of-event Team Points Award. Teams, said DeSarro, will be given opportunities throughout the season to earn points and the team with the most points at the end will receive a trophy.
“Their first opportunity is to get their team signed-up and registered online,” she added. “There will be several other challenges leading up to July’s event, where they can also earn points by participating in various contests and other activities.”
