St. Baldrick’s Foundation shaving heads, raising money for a good cause

NORWICH – As the battle against cancer wages on, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation continues to raise money to support childhood cancer research through an event that leaves behind tears, smiles and of course, fashionably shaven heads.
Last year, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation raised over $28.3 million for childhood cancer research, cancer facilities, and physicians entering the field – shaving the heads of 40,076 volunteering sponsors, both male and female, nationwide.
Once again, the foundation will bring its efforts to Norwich this Saturday when it hosts its annual fundraiser beginning at 6 p.m. at Park Place Restaurant, 7 East Park Place in Norwich.
“This is a nice family event that everyone looks forward to.” said Tracy Chawgo, city fire chief and the area’s St. Baldrick’s event coordinator. “Everybody knows someone, or knows someone who knows someone else, that has had to deal with cancer ... it’s all part of living in a small community.”
This will be Chawgo’s ninth and final year organizing the event. Almost every year, local sponsors have exceeded the $10,000 goal, Chawgo noted. Steadfast support for the event in Chenango County has brought in nearly $40,000 during its best year. In 2011, $27,432 was raised after shaving 44 heads. Donations were down slightly from the $31,000 raised in the county in 2010.
A $10,000 goal has been set again this year and with an anticipated two to three hundred people attending the event and nearly $8,600 raised already, sponsors are almost certain to surpass the goal again this year, Chawgo added.
“This is something that’s taken on a life of its own ... Every year, there are new surprises,” he added, recalling shaving the head of Norwich City Mayor Joseph Maiurano one year, which alone raised $500.
City Emergency Management Officer A. Jones, an active participant in the St. Baldrick’s event, will step in to replace Chawgo as the area St. Baldrick’s event coordinator next year, during its 10th anniversary in Norwich.
“Tracy’s done a great job and I have some ideas to cover and carry on the tradition,” said Jones, who has taken part in all but one of the annual events in the past.
Jones is now joined in the event by his eight-year-old son, Tyler. Together, Jones and his son (Team Tyler) have raised more than $3,000 during the last two St. Baldrick’s fundraisers.
“Unfortunately, we’ve seen cases locally of children with cancer and anything we can do to raise money to help the cause is great,” Jones said. “This is a wonderful family event that anyone can come to and obviously it’s for a great cause.”
Interested participants in the St. Baldrick’s fundraiser are encouraged to pre-register. Registration on Saturday’s event will be at 5 p.m. at the Park Place Restaurant. More details are available by contacting Chawgo at 334-3411 or via email, chawgo@roadrunner.com. More information can also be found on the St. Baldrick’s website, www.stbaldricks.org.
