Norwich junior wrestlers heading to MAWAs

NORWICH – The Norwich junior wrestling team will send 17 wrestlers to the Middle Atlantic Wrestling Association North Regional Tournament April 6-7 at Shamokin High School in Coal Township, Pa.
The wrestlers earned spots in the tournament after top place finishes at the Regional District Championships earlier this month.
The assemblage of wrestlers included some the top present and future wrestlers at Norwich, including Tristan Rifanburg, first in nationals in 2011, and a 2010 New York State Division II champion.
Several wrestlers have racked up impressive records at various tournaments this season. Troy Spratley (68-1), Elijah Rodriguez (30-1), and Tyler Rice (29-1) have just one loss this season. In additional, Rifanburg (65-4), Griffin Mills (44-5), Ty Rifanburg (30-3), Torin Lawrence (28-4), James Jones (29-5), and Austin Foulds (25-4) have five or fewer losses. Of note, Spratley, just eight years old, recently earned his 300th career victory.
Students who win at the regional championships advance to the the Eastern National Championships at Wicomico Civic Center in Salisbury, Md. on May 5-6.
The cost of these trips is prohibitive for each wrestler, and families are responsibile for the travel and lodging. To help defray those costs, the Norwich Wrestling boosters are hosting a dance for kids grades 3-6 at the Norwich YMCA on March 31 from 6-8 p.m. Rockstar DJ Service, owned by Ryan Revoir and Rhett Genung, are graciously donating their time and equipment to the event.
“We have been working with schools and youth organizations for about eight years now, and we are very happy to have their business,” Revoir said. “In return, we like to give our time, on occasion, as a public service and as a thank you to help these organizations thrive and provide what is necessary for the youth in our community to succeed both athletically and academically.”
Donations to the wrestling team will also be accepted. Please send checks to: Norwich Wrestling Boosters, 170 Warner Road, Norwich, NY 13815.
Other team members – all with outstanding records – heading to Shamokin are Brennan Slater (25-6), Shane Lawrence (15-10), Mikey Squires (22-8), Brenden Gager (30-10), Cody Bradbury (40-8), Ashton Jenkins (24-12), and Devin Depew (25-9). Additionally, Spratley, Tristan Rifanburg, Rodriguez, Rice, Mills, Torin Lawrence, and Gager earned qualifiying spots in the NYWAY (New York Wrestling Association for Youth) state championship tournament March 25 at Cornell University. Tanner Cummings (29-3), a longtime member of the Norwich junior wrestling program, will attempt to qualify for the MAWAs this week, said Norwich boosters president, Jennifer Rice.
