Oxford appoints new superintendent

OXFORD – The Oxford Board of Education has appointed Dr. David Richards to the position of Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Richards will begin on July 1.
“The whole board is looking forward to welcoming Dr. Richards and his wife to the community and for him to begin,” said school board president Dawn Golden. “We feel he will be a very good fit for the schools.”
Dr. Richards is currently working as the Middle-High School principal in Deposit, and said he would like to finish out the year before beginning a new position.
According to Golden, while in Deposit, Dr. Richards increased the graduation rate as well as the eligibility rate of athletes and said she believes he will “bring a lot to Oxford.”
Dr. Richards was also principal in Livingston Manor and Dean of Students in the Sidney Central School District. He received his PhD from Binghamton University, and his Bachelor’s and Masters’ degrees from SUNY Oneonta.
“I am honored and thrilled to have been chosen as the next Superintendent of Oxford, and I would like to thank the hiring committees and the BOE,” said Dr. Richards. Oxford has a long-standing reputation as an excellent school district and I am eager to start work and become a part of the school and community activities.”
“I’m excited and happy that the board has chosen such a skilled and intelligent person to take the superintendency,” said Oxford’s interim Superintendent Sylvia Root. “There were many positive remarks from the community throughout the process.” Root has served in the school’s top spot since last year’s departure of Superintendent Randy Squier.
Root explained that her time in Oxford was enjoyable and that the year went well except for additional state mandates and the process of integrating that into the core curriculum. She said she expected that to keep Richards equally busy in the coming years.
When asked what advice she would give Dr. Richards upon entering the school system, Root said: “Get to know the students, staff and the community ... this is a community that is involved in the educational process and is interested in students succeeding; he’ll profit from spending time with those three components.”
