The Dumb File
Dumb stuff seems to be in the air lately.
First, a big earthquake in Mexico draws attention to the Obamas’ daughter. The White House has to tell the world their 13-year-daughter is okay, following the quake. With this release, they blow her cover. They reveal she is vacationing there. And the press has been mum about it.
Once the Obamas blew her cover they then pressured the press to shut up about any further travels of their daughter. And the press complied. Which is what the press used to do under communism in the old Soviet Union and East Germany. And which it still does in Russia and other totalitarian-run countries.
The dumb stuff is that the Obamas’ allowed their 13-year-old to travel to a country which is under siege from drug mobs. Mexico is a damned dangerous place in some respects.
Sure, she has secret service protection. And they are costing taxpayers a pretty penny. But they would probably not be able to deal with drug terrorists who really wanted to kidnap her. Those guys operate armies of thugs in Mexico.
If ever they kidnapped the daughter of the President, what do you suppose this country would do? It would probably invade Mexico. I am serious.
The Obamas spent a bundle of taxpayer dollars. They put this country into a possibly horrible position. They exposed the U.S. to a possible invasion of another country. They exposed their daughter to a potentially horrific situation. And for what? For the vacation pleasure of a teenager. And then they blew her cover for the sake of some feel-good PR.
This is about as dumb as parents can be. They may as well send her out bicycling without a helmet on the busiest highways around D.C.
Also in the Dumb File this week: The big bucks spent to bring us more and more pictures of the sunken Titanic. These include computer enhanced images of the hulk. As well as satellite-aided images. As well as photos taken at great cost by divers and robots.
Sure, they are fascinating. But, hey guys, we have seen lots of photos of the Titanic by now. It has not changed much in the last few years. And in the end it is a heap of metal on the floor of the ocean. The teacups and the bathtubs you have photographed for us are, well, teacups and bathtubs. And all the scummy stuff growing all over what is left of the ship is not too appetizing.
Meanwhile, some other intrepid guys are hot on the trail again of Amelia Earhart. She and her plane went missing in the Pacific 75 years ago.
Some people are spending big bucks for an expedition to try to find the remains of her plane. Hilary Clinton spoke out in favor of it. She lauded Amelia for her spirit, etc.
Uhhh, Hilary, this brave woman did a stupid thing. She flew poorly equipped on a loony mission and lost her life. And expedition members, if you find the pieces of her plane, great. But…you will have found a bunch of rusted parts of a plane. With gunk growing over them. Okay.
Last item in the Dumb File: A Ralph Loren store in New York City lost a handbag to a shoplifter this week. A handbag worth $24,000. Let me rephrase that. A handbag priced at $24,000. Crocodile skin bag.
Think about this. Suppose you ran a shop. And suppose you had an item priced at $24,000. Would you display it on an open shelf?
I don’t think you would. Because I don’t think you are that dumb. And I bet you’re not dumb enough to cave in to a teenage daughter One who insists she just has to go to dangerous Mexico for vacation.
