Spring cleaning

How incredible was last week’s weather? Even if it snows today, last week was worth it and we’re still almost into April.
Speaking of spring, I’ve begun to take part in that time honored tradition of spring cleaning during which everyone goes through their stuff and decides how much of it we don’t really like as much as last year.
While sorting through the immense piles of stuff, I couldn’t help but wonder, where does it all come from? I know some might be gifts, some of it I’ve had for years, and of course a good chunk comes from garage and yard sales.
By the way, it’s awfully cruel that everyone else is trying to get rid of their stuff at the same time I’m making room in mine. I think I’ve finally cleared up all of the extras and then before I know it I have new stuff. It’s a vicious cycle.
Anyway, I can still never quite comprehend where everything comes from. I pack it away, sell it, donate it to Goodwill and sometimes just throw it away, but still it seems like there’s always more.
I won’t lie, I’m a bit of a pack rat. It’s nothing like that show ‘Hoarders’ – those people have a kind of sickness, to be honest. No, my problem is as I go through each item I think: “I could use this some day.”
Sometimes I do end up using whatever it was that I felt I had to save. Usually, it sits in a drawer for another three years, only popping up when I don’t need it and utterly un-findable when I do.
String, nails and tacks, various craft items ... I just always think further down the line I’ll find some amazing use for the otherwise useless items. I enjoy doing projects around the house – also on everyone’s list this time of year – so I like to keep things handy in case I need them.
To be honest, I jerry-rig most of the projects I do and I couldn’t do it without the help of knick-knacks and left-behinds. However, those blessings are also a curse when it come to finding things that are very important ... like my birth certificate or W-2’s.
But no matter what, every time I begin to clean I find things that seem more useful than last year, so I chuck them back in the drawers, nooks, shelves, etc. and pray that soon I’ll need to tie something to a tack in the wall.
