Singing for YOUR Supper at Habitat’s Souper Bowl this Saturday
NORWICH – This Saturday, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., the Norwich VFW. Post #2782 will be the location for Chenango County Habitat for Humanity’s (CCHH) new soup tasting fund raiser, the CCHH Souper Bowl. There will be twenty-two different ladle-ready creations from area restaurants to taste, a Chobani yogurt give-away, an amazing Chinese Auction, door prizes, a 50-50 raffle, and a bake sale! If you are still on the fence about going, three talented local performers -Kevin La Due, Brian Murphy, and Kaitlyn Jackson- will be there generously sharing their time, and passion for singing, at no additional cost. Let their music invite you in to the Souper Bowl while you “Sip Some Soup and Help a House Hold!”
If you were at the CCHH’s fall dinner at St. Paul’s in Oxford, you may remember performer, Brian Murphy. Brian, of Norwich, is a vocalist, guitar musician and songwriter. Murphy brings an unusual mix to his set list that includes original compositions, classic rock, some country-rock, and some old-time and patriotic favorites.
Murphy will be selling his two CDs with all the proceeds going to Habitat. Sweeney and Murphy Live at the Silo, (2006), and Golden Phoenix, (2007), recorded at the Bohemian Moon in Norwich.
Murphy said, “I hope that people support Habitat for Humanity, in part, by buying these CDs. I volunteered for Habitat years ago on a home in Norwich and I loved working on it. You meet great, community-minded people through Habitat and I wish the organization nothing but the best in the years to come.”
Kevin La Due makes music in more ways than one. Originally from Weedsport, La Due has called Whitney Point home for many years. Teaching wood shop developed into a very unique wood craft course… hand-making guitars! Kevin is one of the few guitar artisans, or luthiers, teaching in the U.S. and he’s been instructing this valuable skill at Vestal High School for about fourteen years. In his retail line, under the name of La Due Acoustic Guitars, he takes pride in proclaiming that the guitar backs, rims and necks are created exclusively from Northeastern hardwoods. Additionally, Kevin is a music teacher and, as he puts it, “a recreational musician” who’s been playing guitar for over thirty years. As a performer, Kevin is a vocalist and a finger-style guitarist who plays folk, pop, and country song covers, such as music by James Taylor, Paul Simon, David Mallet, Cheryl Wheeler, and more.
“It’s music I like and it’s easy to listen to,” stated La Due. “It will create the perfect atmosphere for soup tasting.”
His French name, “La Due,” literally translates into “the gentle” which appropriately describes his performance style; it’s passionate and soothing, laced with humor and uplifting messages.
Kaitlyn Jackson, vocalist, songwriter, and recording artist from Norwich, is not a teacher but a young student. Fourteen-year-old Kaitlyn has already been acting and singing for nine years (dancing even longer), and she’s even writing her own songs. As early as age seven, Kaitlyn got to sing with Kenny Rogers and Linda Davis at Rogers’ Christmas Show. Since then she has opened for many national recording artists. Jackson’s won several awards, including the NY State County Music Hall of Fame’s 2011 Horizon Award, and she was named the Central NY Radio Group Junior-Idol Winner.
While in Nashville, Kaitlyn co-wrote with hit songwriters Sarah Majors and Marty Brown as well as other accomplished songwriters. Her first demo CD, titled, Crush, recorded in 2011, includes a mix of her original pop and country songs. Her professional singing career has taken off like a rocket!
Everybody’s favorite emcee, Jim Baldwin from Oxford, will be the host and provide his sound system so the three wonderful musical entertainers sound their best.
Habitat for Humanity offers “a hand up, not a handout.” Plan to attend the Souper Bowl and help Habitat make dreams come true by helping to provide affordable housing to families in Chenango County. Proceeds will help to support CCHH’s next housing project to begin in spring, in West Bainbridge. It’s being constructed with Lorraine Cornish, and her two sons.
Souper Bowl admission - $6 per person; $20 per family of four (adults & children); Under age 5 – free. VFW – 61 East Main Street, Norwich. CCHH thanks generous sponsors: Pennysaver, Visions Federal Credit Union, NBT Bank, The Evening Sun, Woollybear Web, and the VFW Post 2782.
