Otselic Valley presents ‘Once Upon a Mattress’
SOUTH OTSELIC – The Otselic Valley Drama Club will present the musical comedy “Once Upon a Mattress” at 7:30 p.m. tonight and Saturday in the junior-senior high school.
A comedic take on Hans Christian Anderson’s classic fairy tale, “The Princess and the Pea,” the popular production will feature OV students Brandon Thornton and Crystal Hayner as King Sextimus and Queen Aggravian, respectively; Alan Lewis as Prince Dauntless; Lindsey Bard as Princess #12; Elisabeth Riechard as Lady Larken; and Michael Larkin as Sir Harry.
Rounding out the cast will be Kaity Davis as Winnifred the Woebegone and Aspen Allen as the Nightingale, as well as Amanda Korb, Ryan Day, Grace Lowry, Esther Lyon, Francesca Cortez, Ella Costa, Peter Kalin, Jonathan Lyon, Shelby Hillman, Gabrielle Lyon, Grace and Tim Riechard, McKenzie Mullenax, Jason Olin, Shelby and Devin Stone, Ashley Scanlon, Hayley Donnelly and Corbin Wiklins-Learned.
The tale follows Queen Aggravian, who has taken control of the kingdom due to a curse that prevents King Sextimus the Silent from speaking. Attempting to keep their son, Prince Dauntless, from marrying, the queen has decreed that only a princess who can pass her test – a sleepless night – may wed the prince. Even worse, none within the kingdom may marry until Dauntless does so.
For Lady Larken and Sir Harry, this presents a problem, as the pair are
determined to wed. Setting out on a danger-filled journey, the brave Sir Harry returns with Winnifred the Woebegone, who, despite being serenaded by a nightingale and drinking a sleeping potion, still manages to pass the queen’s test. When the queen continues her attempt to prevent the marriage, Dauntless unknowingly breaks the king’s curse. No longer Sextimus the Silent, the king regains his rightful position as ruler and it’s happily ever after throughout the kingdom.
“‘Once Upon a Mattress’ has been fun for the students ... they really enjoy the story line and the music,” said Director Winifred Sortman. “This year, the crew built a unit set that is the largest and most elaborate at Otselic Valley to date.”
Any time junior and senior high school students are asked to perform a professional musical is extremely challenging, added Sortman. The most amazing – and gratifying – aspect, however, is “experiencing the evolution of the cast from disjunctive to a cohesive performing family,” she said.
Tickets for both shows are $5. It takes place in the Multi-Purpose Room at Otselic Valley, 125 County Rd. 13A, South Otselic.
