NYCM in Sherburne receives recognition from “Adopt a Soldier” program

SHERBURNE – U.S. Army Specialist Collin Miller presented New York Central Mutual in Sherburne with an American flag Wednesday for their continued participation in the “Adopt a United States Soldier” program.
The program has been connecting civilians with deployed soldiers for seven years, helping soldiers receive items that are not readily available in their area.
According to NYCM Human Resources Officer Eva Sherwood, the Sherburne branch has sponsored over 20 service men and women since 2008. Hygiene products, food, games, puzzles and books are just a few of the items that the company collects. Individual purchase items and add them to care packages that are mailed over-seas every few weeks and every holiday.
Currently, the branch sponsors three soldiers including Miller.
Most recently, NYCM employees collected and provided multiple cases of coffee per the soldiers request.
“We try and provide them with whatever they need most at the time,” said Sherwood. “We had heard that they were really lacking in coffee, so we sent them about a ton.”
In appreciation of their continued support, Miller, a Sherburne native, visited the company to bestow a flag to the Sherburne branch. He explained at the ceremony that the flag had at one time flown from the back of a helicopter during a mission in Afghanistan.
“It was very exciting and an honor to have Collin here,” said Sherwood. “It was an honor to be recognized ... all of the employees have a chance to provide things. It’s a group effort.”
Miller’s mother Sandy works at NYCM and she and five veteran employees were on hand to accept the flag on behalf of the Sherburne branch.
Sherwood explained that although they try to find local soldiers to support, the branch is willing to provide help wherever it is needed.
“It’s a program that we’re all proud to participate in. We feel it’s important to give back to these men and women in any way possible.”
Collin, a Blackhawk door gunner and Apache mechanic, will be re-deploying soon, once again to Afghanistan. During the presentation of the flag he thanked the members of the Sherburne branch and explained how much the care packages mean to deployed soldiers.
