School Counselors hold annual College Day tomorrow

NORWICH – The Chenango County School Counselor Association will host its annual Spring College Day from 10:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Norwich Family YMCA. The goal? To motivate high school juniors – and other students – to explore the many benefits a college education can provide.
Said Sherburne-Earlville Central School counselor Candice Poyer, “It’s never too early for [students] to look into post-secondary opportunities.”
The association first began sponsoring College Day forums approximately 20 years ago. And while the number of colleges attending has varied over the years, the association typically offers a diverse representation of New York and other out-of-state colleges, said Poyer. Holding College Day in the spring, she added, helps offset similar events held in the fall in the Oneonta and Binghamton areas.
“Many students do not get an opportunity to visit colleges directly and find that College Day is an excellent way to begin searching for the right college,” stated Poyer. “College Day is one of the best ways to expose students to a wide variety of schools and give them a broad perspective of the options that are available to them.”
Approximately 45 colleges are expected to attend, including public and private institutions, two- and four-year schools, as well as vocational, armed services and Reserve Officers’ Training Corps representatives.
It’s an event, said organizers, that would be nearly impossible for an individual school to hold, even if it does take some time out of the school day.
Added Poyer, “Holding College Day as a county allows us to attract more colleges for better representation.”
High schools from Chenango, Otsego, Delaware and Madison counties have been invited to attend, in addition to parents and the community. Assorted prizes will be awarded throughout the day – including a $100 cash prize – thanks to donations from local businesses, participating colleges and the Chenango County School Counselor Association itself. At least one junior from each participating high school will take home a prize of some sort, said Poyer.
