Norwich welcomes the new Sunrise Diner north of city

NORWICH – Local diners who are in search of something new now have a different option at the north end of town as the Sunrise Diner officially opened its doors last week.
What’s unique about the Sunrise Diner? According to owner Chris Ziavras, it’s a daily offering of Greek specialties. Although the diner serves a variety of American classics like burgers, omelets and specialty sandwiches, it prides itself in also serving a combination of Greek foods, prepared from various cheeses and spices, and cooked in a fashion that’s not found at most other local eateries.
“We use a lot of olive oil, goat cheese and different spices to give it a different flavor,” Ziavras explained, noting that this is what separates Greek food from everything else. “The big thing is that everything has to be fresh,” he added.
Some ingredients used at the Sunrise Diner are not easily available in the local market, Ziavras went on to say. “Sometimes, we’re going to need to bring in shipments of some ingredients from the city,” he said. “I don’t want to skimp on anything and I want to be able to give the best product.”
Much of what Ziavras knows about the restaurant business he credits to his father, who now works at the Sunrise Diner along side of two other of Ziavras’ employees.
“I grew up in restaurants,” Ziavras said, explaining that throughout his childhood, his father always had a restaurant in New York City. “Being in a diner is just something that I like. I went to school for automotive mechanics, but this is what I really want to do. It’s something that I enjoy much more.”
Following the grand opening of his new eatery at the end of March, Ziavras said he wasn’t sure what to expect for his small business. As a mechanic who recently moved to the area from New York City, Ziavras said he’s still adjusting to Chenango County and familiarizing himself with the demands of local diners in hopes of providing what they crave. It’s a cultural challenge, but he said he’s loving every minute of it.
“I’m done with the city,” Ziavras said. “It’s quaint here and I like the people. It’s not a big city and there’s not too much commotion ... Getting out of the city presents a whole different world.”
The Sunrise Diner is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday at 6171 State Highway 12 in Norwich.
