Blueox dethrones two-time defending champs
NORWICH – Blueox Energy Products had more gas left in the tank in Tuesday night’s Norwich YMCA Men’s Corporate Basketball League final.
The Energymen, sporting a deeper bench than two-time defending champion Norwich Pennysaver/Manpower, surged in the second half to capture their first league championship, 81-68.
The victory avenges Blueox’s lone defeat, a three-point setback to Pennysaver/Manpower in early February.
Blueox quickly erased a two-point halftime deficit scoring seven straight points in the first 70 seconds of the second half – two buckets coming off Pennysaver/Manpower turnovers – to take the lead for good.
Zach Williams, Amos Parry, and Brian Collier all converted layups with Collier’s a traditional three-point play giving his club a 41-36 lead.
The defending champions twice pared the deficit to one point, the latter on a Mike Genute jumper that cut the margin to 45-44. with just over 20 minutes left in the second half.
From there, Blueox embarked on a 12-2 salvo that put the game out of reach as it consistently outhustled Pennysaver/Manpower to loose balls, while the champ’s outside shots were coming up short – telltale signs of wearing down.
Parry had half of Blueox’s points during its dozen-point run, and Dallas Perez contributed a pair of hoops lifting the lead to 57-46. The two teams then traded buckets with Blueox’s Williams canning back-to-back threes from the right wing to keep the lead in double digits.
“I’ve been (officiating) championship games the last 12 years, and this was the best game I’ve seen in terms of offense, defense, and sportsmanship,” said game official Keith Reynolds after the contest.
The typically balanced Energymen again had four players finish in double figures scoring led by Collier’s 17 points. Williams, who started the game on the bench, added 15, Perez scored 12, while Parry had 10. Robert Martin added nine in the victory.
Pennysaver/Manpower’s Will Joslyn canned a season-best four three-pointers, and led all scorers with 27 points. Genute netted 17 and Cory Montgomery chimed in with 11 markers.
