Oxford ranks at FFA Sub-states
OXFORD – Oxford Academy and Central School was chosen to host the FFA sub-state contest last Saturday. Five Oxford students also participated in the contest.
More than 250 students from 15 school districts across eastern New York State attended the event, which challenges students in a variety of contests that pertain to the agricultural curriculum of the club.
Agriculture teacher and FFA advisor Crystal Aukema said she was especially proud of the group that had worked so hard to prepare for the competition.
“It’s been such a pleasure to teach these students and watch them grow and come out of their shells,” said Aukema. She explained that all of the students who participated were competeing for either the first or second time. “Everyone started out a little nervous, but they’ve worked very hard and it shows.”
The contests that were hosted at Saturday’s event included prepared speaking, interview, extemporaneous speaking, creed speaking, agricultural issues, people in agriculture and parliamentary procedure.
The five students participated as a group in the agricultural issues team placing fourth, and three students participated in single categories.
Shelby Maricle placed sixth in the interview, Melissa Moore placed fourth in extemporaneous speaking and Megan Golden placed second in “People in Agriculture” and will go on to states on May 30 at the Vernon-Verona-Sherill school district.
“It’s been a really fun process,” said Golden while preparing for the competition.
