Norwich Ministerium to hold first-ever Walk of Faith
NORWICH – A number of the city’s religious institutions, known collectively as the Norwich Ministerium, will join in a show of unity for the first-ever Community Walk of Faith, which will set out at 10 a.m. Saturday from the First Baptist Church, 10 West Park Place.
The goal, according to First Baptist Pastor David Spiegel, is to raise awareness, food and money in a community-wide fight against hunger. And everyone – no matter their faith – is welcome to participate.
Members of the Lutheran, Methodist, United Church of Christ, Episcopal, Baptist and Jewish Community Center congregations will join together for the 1.9 mile walk, which will make its way west and south down West Main, Maple, Hayes and Locust streets before turning east onto Eaton Avenue. The walk will then continue south onto South Broad Street; along the length of Brown Avenue; north on Birdsall Street; and westward once again on Mechanic Street, ending at the Broad Street United Methodist Church.
Food and monetary donations will be collected along the way, said Spiegel, which will benefit the Episcopal Church’s Our Daily Bread food pantry and Catholic Charities of Chenango County’s Roots and Wings program. Raising awareness within the community, however, is just as important as gathering donations, he added.
“We want to let people know that there really is need in the community,” stated Spiegel. “Everyone is welcome and we would love everybody to be a part ... we want to get out in the community, connect with people and see where we can help out.”
Spiegel, joined by UCC Pastor Joseph Connolly and other leaders within the ministerium, said they’re hoping to make the Community Walk of Faith an annual event.
Said Spiegel, “We’re very excited. There’s always some question of where people can go for help and we want them to know the ministerium, and all churches, are there to help.”
Added Connolly, “This is all about feeding hungry people.”
Those wishing to donate may also drop off any non-perishable food items at the First Baptist Church prior to the walk, at any church along its route or with participants as they make their way across the city. Spiegel and Connolly stressed that everyone is welcome.
“People are welcome to participate, even those whose church leadership might not be participating,” said Spiegel. “This community is really worth the effort.”
Refreshments will be served at the Broad Street United Methodist Church following the Community Walk of Faith and there is no rain date. For more information, call 336-2509.
