Norwich bounces back behind Barnes

WINDSOR – Coming off a lopided loss Wednesday in its home opener, Norwich went back to Ben Barnes to regain its early-season momentum.
Barnes, who threw a no-hitter Monday at Greene, pitched a complete-game five-hitter allowing two unearned runs as Norwich improved its record to 2-1 Thursday afternoon. “Ben did another outstanding job on the mound, and we played exceptional defense behind him,” said Norwich coach John Martinson.
Robbie Wheeler was 2-for-2 for Norwich with an RBI and a run scored, Colby Griffin ripped a two-run single, while Justin Lindenthaler and John Yacano added ribbies for the Tornado. “Everybody in our lineup produced tonight,” Martinson added, whose club is 2-0 in road games.

BAINBRIDGE – Unatego broke a tie game with four runs in the top of the ninth to defeat B-G Thursday.
Dan Shelton and Tyler Butler hit two-run singles in the final inning to lead the Spartans. Shelton added two innings of scoreless relief for the victory. “Our kids came out and played a lot better than the first game,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “Our kids made a couple of mistakes - and that’s part of the game, - but overall it was a much better performance.”
Timmy Parsons had a three-run triple for B-G and finished 2-for-4. Billy Holden also had two hits in the loss.
B-G plays at Delhi Monday.

HARPURSVILLE – Greene’s improvement through the opening week of games yielded its first win of the season Thursday.
Since a no-hit loss to Norwich on Monday, the Trojans’ bats have generated plenty of hits, and the 12 singles against the Hornets provided offense aplenty for senior pitcher Jeff Carlin. “Tonight was a really big step,” said Greene coach Steve Burghardt. “It was a case where the younger kids watched our senior pitcher make use of defense, and give up just one harmless walk.”
Carlin struck out seven and scattering seven hits in am 83-pitch route-going performance.
Nick Viglucci led the Trojans’ hitters with a 3-for-4 day and two runs scored. Brett Ramsey smacked a two-run single in the third inning, and Carlin had a pair of runs scored. Greene is now 1-2 on the season.

DELHI – Delhi raced to an 8-0 lead after three innings to hand Oxford its third loss of the week on Thursday.
Delhi’s Brandon Snyder had RBI doubles in the second and third innings, and Tyler Hymers added an RBI single in the second. Hymers also picked up the win pitching 6 1-3 innings. He struck out nine and walked three. “We thought that if we could limit our errors and put the ball in play, we had a good shot (to win) today,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “Give Delhi credit for starting quick.”

SCHENEVUS – Schenevus rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to squeeze by G-MU in Thursday’s Tri-Valley League game.
Jacob Darling hit a two-run single during the four-run fifth to give the Dragons the lead for good.
G-MU claimed the lead in the top half of the fifth scoring five runs of its own. Jason Barrows, DeMario Reed, and Tim French had consecutive RBI hits. “It seemed like the times we put their guys on base or made an error, it came back and bit us,” said G-MU coach Rick Mohrein. “We only have three guys back from last year and it was our first game against another team. We did a pretty good job with the exception of the fifth inning.”
Barrows, Austin Burnside, and Christian Merlo had two hits apiece for G-MU, who play at Afton Monday.

EDMESTON – Edmeston committed 10 errors to aid UV’s effort, and the Storm pulled away for a non-league victory Wednesday afternoon.
Brett Smith struck out eight in six innings for the victory, and Brandon Kuhn was 3-for-3 with two stolen bases and three RBI. Brandon Miles also scored three runs. “It was a closer game than the score would indicate,” said UV coach Gary Alford. “Thankfully, our pitchers pounded the strike zone. It’s early and we can’t be satisfied with our at-bats. We need more patience at the plate.”

HARPURSVILLE – Unlike its first game when the bats came to life late in the game, Greene scored early and scored often in Thursday win over Harpursville.
After a lead-off walk in the top of the first, Rebecca Hanrahan hit a two-run homer, and Taylor Ellis followed with a solo home run as part of a four-run first. Hanrahan finished 5-for-5 with four runs and three RBI, Ellis was 3-for-4, and Sierra Stopkotte homered and scored two runs.
“Both of our games were played in the cold weather, so I am really excited about where we are with our hitting,” said Greene coach Rick Smith.
Hanrahan picked up her second win of the season striking out 13 and walking three.

Lauren Hill and Alicia Sebeck each went 5-for-6 to top the Raiders. Hill doubled and tripled scoring four runs, and Sebeck finished with three runs scored. “Since the start of practice we’ve focused on solid, quality at-bats, and they’re coming out and executing,” said G-MU coach Tina Cole of her team.
Marisa Melrose picked up the victory giving up seven hits. She was backed by strong defense including nice plays in the final inning from Hill and Whitney Gilbert.
