Hancock 14, G-MU 0 (6 innings)
HANCOCK – Cole Duston held G-MU hitless Tuesday throwing a no-hitter, and was one batter away from a perfect game in leading the defending Section IV Class D champions to a shutout win.
Duston struck out 11 and walked one – the first batter of the game. Duston induced a double play to follow the walk, and faced the minimum of 18 batters in the six-inning contest. “He was definitely the best pitcher we’ve seen so far this season,” said G-MU coach Rick Mohrein of Duston.
Todd Wainman hit a solo homer in the second for Hancock’s first run, and Joe Petriella was a perfect 3-for-3. G-MU did not produce any offense, but did shore up the defense committing just one error.
“I was proud of our defense, and it was a big improvement from Monday to today,” Mohrein said.
Duston had one close call in which his defense preserved the no-hitter. The Raiders’ Tim French hit a soft line drive into right field that Eli Holton dove and caught for the putout.
