Good pitching, hitting lifts Norwich to pair of weekend wins

Baseball

Norwich 8, Oxford 3
NORWICH – Norwich won its third and fourth straight games Friday and Saturday defeating Oxford and Chenango Forks at home.
The Tornado received a pair of complete-game pitching performances with Justin Lindenthaler taming the Blackhawks on Friday for his first win this season, while sophomore Cody Barnes overcame a rocky opening two innings for his first varsity win.
Colby Griffin had a two-run double in the third inning against Oxford to help erase a 2-1 deficit. The Blackhawks had forged ahead behind a two-run double from Andrew Golden in the top half of the same inning.
Brendan McInerney led NHS with a 3-for-4 day, Grady Thompson had two hits, an RBI and two runs scored, while Griffin and Cody Barnes each had 2-for-3 days.
Less than 24 hours later, Barnes gave up all five runs over the first two innings, but was supported by a potent Tornado offense that tagged Forks pitching for 10 runs over those same two innings.
Thompson stroked a three-run double in Norwich’s six-run second inning, and Ben Barnes ripped an RBI triple in the third.
Cody Barnes finished the game with five shutout frames and had nine strikeouts. Ben Barnes, Griffin, and Lindenthaler all had two hits, while Josh Haines and Cody Barnes drove in one run apiece.

Lansing 8, Greene 0
GREENE – Benji Parkes tossed a one-hit shutout for Lansing, and the Bobcats took advantage of eight Greene errors in Friday’s non-league victory.
“Parkes is a big lefty with a good curveball and fastball, and he shut us down pretty good,” said Greene coach Steve Burghardt.
Burghardt said that other than a couple of RBI basehits, Lansing scored in just about every way possible after Greene miscues. “It was death by a thousand cuts,” Burghardt said summing up the game.
Greene is at Oxford today, the first of five games this week for the Trojans.

G-MU 14, Afton 13
COPE CORNERS – G-MU rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Afton Saturday and avenge a 22-0 defeat to Crimson Knights earlier this season.
Tim French went 2-for-3 with three RBI, and had the game-winning hit to drive in Jason Barrows. Rian West and Nate Fuller also had two RBI apiece for the Raiders.
“ It wasn't a strong defensive game, but we pulled out a win,” said G-MU coach Rick Mohrein. “After our last outing against Afton, this one was much more satisfying for my players and I.”
Afton’s Mark Viviano was 3-for-3 with four runs scored and one ribbie, while Austin Ticknor had two hits and two RBI.

Softball

Norwich 12, Oxford 4
NORWICH – Norwich scored seven runs in the sixth inning to pull away for its first win of the season, Friday afternoon against visiting Oxford.
Eighth-grader Cassidy Seary was 2-for-2 with a triple and a three-run homer to highlight the sixth. Molly Moore was 3-for-5 with two RBI, Jaime Berger had two hits and two RBI, while Kat DeTomi and Shannon Moore also had two-hit days.
Berger picked up the victory allowing two hits. She struck out eight and walked six. “We had a real good practice yesterday (Thursday), and I said that I would feel sorry for the other team once everyone starts to hit,” said Norwich coach Scott Moore. “Oxford struggled in the field a bit, and I think they have a young team, but we were just hitting it solid most of the time.”
Julianne Heggie and Jessica Frank were credited with Oxford’s basehits.

Greene 6, Johnson City 2
JOHNSON CITY – Greene took a step up in competition Saturday facing Johnson City of the Southern Tier Athletic Conference, and came away with a non-league victory.
Greene put two runs on the board in the first inning, and was never threatened. Rebecca Hanrahan allowed just two hits and struck out 13 to earn the victory, and she added a two-run homer in the top of the sixth that raised the lead to 6-0.
Caitlin Willis had her best game of the young season finishing 4-for-5 and scoring three runs. “We scored early and that gave us confidence right away,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “Even when we made outs, we were hitting the ball hard. “This is a big win for us because Johnson City is a much larger school, and it gives us some momentum heading into Tuesday’s game against Afton.”
Natalie Greene added an RBI double in the sixth for Greene scoring Taylor Ellis. Hanrahan finished with two hits and Greene outhit the Wildcats, 13-2.

Conover Make Some Hay Invitational
BAINBRIDGE – Six new meet records were established Saturday in Bainbridge-Guilford at the Russ Conover “Make Some Hay Invitational.”
Renamed in honor of the former B-G/Afton track and field coach, who passed away earlier this year, Norwich senior Patrick Taylor set two new records – one breaking his own mark – while the host Bears established a new record in the distance medley, narrowly edging a quartet from Norwich.
Taylor, who tied Norwich’s outdoor school record in the long jump the previous week, surged 21 feet, 5 inches to establish a new mark. Taylor also won the triple jump in 39 feet 6 1/2 inches to break his own record by over seven inches.
Also for Norwich, sophomore Brooke Bonney tossed the shot put a personal-best 34 feet, 5 inches to give the Tornado girls their lone first-place finish, and Matt Murray along with Nuri Harper claimed victories for the NHS boys in the 400- and 800-meter races.
G-MU junior Eddie Ray Cotton topped the sprinters speeding to wins in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.
Connor Fuller had three overall wins for the B-GA boys teaming on the record-breaking relay, notching a first in the 1,600 meters, and also running a leg on the Bears’ winning sprint medley.
G-MU thrower Christina Hawkins won the discus and took second behind Bonney in the shot put.
