BOCES to hold short story contest for students

NORWICH – Students in the DCMO BOCES district are invited to participate in a short story contest for a chance to have a piece of work published.
The contest is open to students ages 15-19 and the deadline for submissions is April 27.
Visual communications and graphic design instructor Sandra Sheldon said she and two other BOCES teachers, Elizabeth Barber-Breese and Kristin White, came up with the idea for the contest last year as a way to promote creativity among their students.
“We were very surprised how well it went last year, and we’re excited to see where it goes this year,” said Sheldon. “It’s just so interesting to hear the different conversations that go on between the students as they’re reading the stories.”
The five winners will be chosen by Sheldon’s BOCES class and will be announced on May 25.
Sheldon explained that the stories must be typed, double-spaced, between 10-15 pages in length and must be submitted electronically as a PDF file.
After the winners are chosen, the students will work with visual communications students to create covers for their works which will be published, along with the stories, in an anthology.
Sheldon explained that each student will receive an anthology and additional copies will be sent to libraries around the district.
“We’re also trying to tap into the social media aspect by promoting the stories on Facebook and Twitter,” said Sheldon. “Last year we even chose the covers by how many ‘Likes’ they received on Facebook.”
All entries must be submitted as a PDF file to Barbere@dcmoboces.com no later than April 27. Any questions about the contest should be directed to Sheldon at 335-1206.
“We’re very excited about where this will go in the future and it’s a great opportunity for the students,” said Sheldon.
