Smith hits walk-off homer in UV victory over Hancock

Unadilla Valley 10, Hancock 9
NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley senior Brett Smith broke a 9-9 tie in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off homer as Unadilla Valley rallied from a early deficit to defeat defending Section IV Class D champion Hancock Thursday afternoon.
Smith, down to his last strike with a 1-2 count, connected on a fastball that richocheted over the outfielder’s head for the easy round-tripper. Smith also pitched four innings of relief to earn the victory.
“Brett really carried us with his bat and his pitching, plus I felt we played some pretty decent defense from the mid innings and on,” said UV coach Gary Alford. “The boys never gave in.”
Hancock led 5-0 after two innings scoring on five basehits and two walks.
UV jumped back into the game scoring five runs in the fifth. Jesse Ranger had a two-run single, Kurt Haycook added an RBI, and Smith scored Haycook with a sacrifice fly.
UV (4-1) is at Afton Monday.

Oxford 13, Harpursville 10
HARPURSVILLE – Oxford completed a perfect 3-0 week and nudged its way back to the .500 mark rallying to beat Harpursville Thursday afternoon.
Adam Pierson’s RBI single scored Matt Moore with the tying run in the seventh. Andrew Golden followed with a two-run single, and Eric Dilfer added insurance with an RBI.
Nate Head pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up the victory for Oxford (4-4), who finished with 15 hits and has raised its team batting average well over 50 points this week. “To be honest, I think we were hitting below our talent level early in the season, and we saw some good pitching,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “We’re not striking out as much, and by putting it in play, we’re giving ourselves more chances.”
Pierson was 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBI, Golden also had three hits and three RBI, while Cameron Heggie and Richard Ryan had two hits apiece.
Jim Kelley tripled and drove in four runs to lead Harpursville.

Deposit 9, B-G 4
BAINBRIDGE - Deposit willingly accepted Bainbridge-Guilford’s charity en route to road victory Thursday.
The Lumberjacks drew 10 walks from three separate B-G pitchers, and five of those baserunners came in to score. Over the first two innings, four of the five runs scored by Deposit came after the baserunners were issued walks. “I knew coming in to the season that we were kind of inexperienced with our pitching, and it showed tonight,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly.
Evan Thomas was 3-for-5 with two RBI for Deposit, and Derek Lenio picked up the win. Unlike his pitching counterparts, Lenio did not issue a walk.
B-G’s Corbin Palmer had two hits including a solo home run, and Billy Holden was 2-for-4 with one RBI.

G-MU 11, Morris 9
MORRIS – G-MU overcame a multitude of early errors rallying from a five-run deficit to earn its third win of the season Thursday afternoon.
The Raiders erupted from eight runs in the top of the fourth against the host Mustangs, who built a 7-2 lead after three innings. The Raiders, for their part, committed nine errors during the game - most of those in the first three frames.
“We played ourselves into that early hole, and I wasn’t happy at the time,” said G-MU coach Rick Mohrein. “But we fought our way out of it, capitalized on some of their mistakes, and we hit the ball.”
DeMario Reed’s two-run double keyed eight-run rally. Jason Barrows led G-MU with three hits and one RBI, Reed had two hits, and Austin Burnside finished 2-for-5.
Barrows struck out seven in five innings for the win, and Reed fanned four over the last two innings to pick up the save.
G-MU plays Remsen Saturday in the Richfield Springs Tournament.

Greene 10, Walton 6
GREENE – Greene moved its record to 3-1 in Midstate Athletic Conference play scoring four runs over the final two innings to pull away for the victory Thursday.
Ninth-place hitter Zach Lindow came through with a pair of RBI singles for the Greene – in the second and third innings – as the Trojans jumped out to a 6-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings. Jeff Carlin had an RBI single in the sixth, and Josh Hurlburt contributed a run-scoring single in the seventh. “We put the ball in play. A couple of their errors were tough ones, but a couple were easy,” said Greene coach Steve Burghardt. “We made four errors, too, but they were spread out and not as costly.”
Greene hosts Cincinnatus Friday.

AFTON – Sidney’s offense erupted for nine runs in the top of the seventh turning a one-run deficit and a tight contest into a comfortable victory Thursday.
Dylan Van Pelt singled to start the uprising and promptly stole second. DaShon Boyles drove Van Pelt in with a single, and Boyles moved to third on an error and scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball. Boyles capped the scoring lacing a solo home run. “We played excellent for six innings. Josh Davy pitched outstanding and kept them off balance for six innings, and the defense was holding,” said Afton coach Ron Rapp. “In the blink of an eye, we were already down four runs.”
Boyles, Van Pelt, Nate McDonald, and Pat Vibbard had two hits for the Warriors.
Jesse Dedman belted a two-run double in the fifth for Afton, and Cameron Oswald ripped a solo homer in the first.

Greene 25, Walton 1 (5 innings)
WALTON – Greene ran its record to a perfect 5-0 blowing out Walton over five innings Thursday.
Rebecca Hanrahan struck out eight and pitched a no-hitter for the victory.
Morgan Ellis went 4-for-5 with four RBI, Caitlin Willis had her second four-hit game of the week and also drove in four runs. Hanrahan contributed a home run, her fifth of the season, and finished with two RBI.
“Our girls did a good job adjusting to their pitcher today, and were staying in line-drive mode,” said Greene coach Rick Smith.
The Trojans play at Afton Saturday.

NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley’s only errors occurred in a six-run third inning for Hancock, who prevailed over the Storm Thursday afternoon.
Jordan Anderson tripled and added a solo homer to start the seventh in a 3-for-4 day to lead UV. Brittany Fairchild, Jackie Smith, and Amanda Leech all finished with two hits.
UV plated two runs in the last inning and had the bases loaded with the tying run at the plate before recording the final out. “The kids played great tonight, just with the overall intensity,” said UV coach Eileen Lawyer.
UV hurler Amanda Avolio struck out two, walked none, and allowed just five hits in a hard-luck loss.

MORRIS – G-MU bounced back from its first loss of the season with a decisive win over Tri-Valley League rival Morris on Thursday.
The Raiders ripped 20 hits – eight for doubles – in its best overall hitting performance of the season. “We worked really hard in practice yesterday on making solid, square contact,” said G-MU coach Tina Cole. “We came out today and did what we worked on.”
Logan Eltz led G-MU with a 4-for-5 day. Alicia Sebeck, Lauren Hill, Marissa Melrose, and Jenny Mason all had two hits.
Melrose surrendered just four hits to pick up the victory.
G-MU (4-1) is at Richfield Springs Saturday.

Oxford 2, Harpursville 1
HARPURSVILLE – Oxford failed to register a hit against Harpursville pitcher Erica Whitney, but made the most of its baserunners in the sixth inning to win for the fourth time in five games this season.
Julianne and Jacquelyn Heggie each walked to start the sixth. Julianne Heggie stole second, and each runner moved up a base on a passed ball. Jess Frank’s sacrifice fly scored Julianne Heggie, and her sister scored behind her on a Harpursville throwing error for what proved to be the winning run.
Oxford’s defense helped preserve the scoreless game in the fourth. Lauren Parks retrieved a hit from Harpursville’s McKenzie Townsend, and threw to infielder Meg Golden. Golden fired to Julianne Heggie at the plate to tag out the Harpursville runner for the final out of the frame.
Townsend had an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth for Harpursville’s lone run.
Jacquelyn Heggie struck out 10 and allowed five hits for the victory.

Boys’ Tennis

Norwich 7, Chenango Valley 0
NORWICH – Coming off a division loss to Owego earlier this week, Norwich showed no ill effects of that defeat blanking Chenango Valley Thursday at Veterans Park.
Matt Craig, who was shaking off a cold, did not surrender a single game winning at second singles over the Warriors’ Justin Gaudinier. At third doubles, Brendan Budd and Linus Impolis rallied from a first-set deficit to go on to win in straight sets. For Budd, it was his first varsity win.
“It was a great match and we played extremely well,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “This match prepares us well for Friday’s against Seton Catholic Central.”
