Stewart’s Shop donates to village youth programs in New Berlin
NEW BERLIN – The Stewart’s Shop in downtown New Berlin donated $2,230 to the village this week. The money was raised between Thanksgiving and Christmas as a part of the convenience store’s Holiday Match Program.
“This is really appreciated,” said Mayor Terry Potter upon receiving the check Thursday. “This will go a long way towards helping kids around the area this summer.”
Joe Brunetta, general manager of the gas station and store, said he is proud to be a part of the community and has always felt welcome by the village.
“This program is a way for us to give back to the community,” said Brunetta. “We’re all very glad to be a part of it ... it’s nice that we can add to the culture and quality of life in the area.”
Brunetta added that he looks forward to the various events that the village puts on each year including the New Berlin Youth Days.
The Holiday Match Program has been sponsored at every Stewart’s Shop since 1986. The program collects donations from individuals and businesses and matches dollar for dollar everything that is raised.
Stewart’s raised over $1.4 million to donate to 1,455 children’s charities around the United States in 2011.
Brunetta said it wasn’t too difficult to get employees and customers excited about the program.
“Everyone in the area is very generous,” he said. “Plus, it’s an easy sell ... all of the contributions go right back to the community. which means that people see the benefits almost immediately. It’s the fact that the money stays local, it benefits your kids or your friends’ kids ... it’s a great, unique program that goes a long way to helping the area.”
“On behalf of the village we thank Stewart’s for their generosity,” said Potter. “The money that they’re giving will, without a doubt, serve the youth of this community ... we’re excited about all of the events that are going to be coming up ... it’s a true testament to their commitment to our community.”
Potter added that the village looks forward to both Youth Days and the upcoming baseball tournament on July 1 at the Chobani Champions Field at Fish Park.
