Sherburne-Earlville student to step-off in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
SHERBURNE – Hard work and dedication for one high school saxophone player at the Sherburne-Earlville High School is paying off as she prepares to join some of the most talented high school musicians in the country.
Sherburne-Earlville sophomore Meaghan Weinell has been selected to join the ranks of only 250 students nationwide who make up the Macy’s Great American Marching Band. Come November, she’ll be marching in formation down 42nd Street in New York City to the excitement of more than 2.5 million spectators lining the streets and nearly 50 million television viewers worldwide during the 86th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
It’s an incredible honor, said the soft-spoken sophomore, “to be with other people who like to play and march as much as I do.”
“It’ll be a really good experience ... I love marching band. It’s my favorite part of the school year,” she added.
Under the encouragement of S-E band director Jeffrey Manwaring, Weinell wowed a pannel of judges with a submitted video performance of a level six solo – the most challenging arrangement of music applicable at the high school level – that beat out thousands of other applicants for a place in the parade lineup.
“He’s probably been my biggest influence so far,” Weinell said of her band director.
What makes marching band so near and dear for Weinell? According to her, it’s the light-hearted atmosphere. “I love being on the street ... Everyone loves it (the parade),” she said, “especially the kids.”
Weinell’s acceptance into the Great American Marching Band has given her a pseudo-celebrity status in the school, drawing attention and condolences from her peers and her teachers.
“We’re all very excited and proud of her,” said Manwaring. “This is really something that younger band students might aspire to if they practice hard enough.”
Of course, the excitement of marching in front of millions doesn’t come without a little apprehension, Weinell noted.
“I’m most nervous about messing up the choreography,” she admitted.
Weinell, who’s the youngest of 10 children, said she comes from a family where musical ability seems to come almost second-nature for some. In addition to her yearly participation in marching band, she has played viola in an Oneonta youth orchestra and was encouraged to take up the saxophone six years ago by one of her older brothers. Since then, the instrument has been a prime hobby outside of academics, she said.
While it will be an honor take part in a televised parade, it won’t be a first for Weinell. In 2010, she and the rest of the Sherburne-Earlville Marching Marauders made the trip to Canton, Ohio to perform at the National Football Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, which was recorded live and syndicated on national television.
Presently, Weinell is seeking financial support to pursue her opportunity to take part in the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Her six-day trip to NYC comes at a cost she hopes to be partially supported by the school’s band boosters organization, friends and family.
