Sophomores hurl wins for Greene
GREENE - Greene received a pair of complete-game victories from sophomores Zach Lindow and Nick Viglucci in beating Cincinnatus (18-3) and Sidney (8-3) this past Friday and Saturday.
Lindow, making his first appearance on the mound this season, needed just 87 pitches in giving up five hits for the win. “After giving up the homer in the first inning, he was great the rest of the way,” said Greene coach Steve Burghardt of Lindow.
Cole Browning tripled and homered for Greene driving in three runs. Joe Beckwith had three hits and two ribbies; Lane Whittaker drove in two on two hits; and Viglucci had three hits and one RBI.
Viglucci took the hill Saturday against Sidney, and needed just 73 pitches to negotiate the seven innings in the victory over the Warriors.
Locked in a 3-3 tie entering the seventh, the Trojans broke open the game with five runs. Whittaker hit a two-run single to unlock the tie, Beckwith followed with a two-run single, and Beckwith scored on Browning’s sacrifice fly.
“We shut Nick down before vacation because he had a sore arm, and he had not pitched in two weeks,” Burghardt said. “Sidney has a free-swinging team, and Nick was able to shut them down.”
A key statistic was holding Sidney’s key hitters Billy Kozak and Jon Wingate to a combined 0-for-8. In last year’s game against Sidney, Burghardt said Kozak and Wingate went 7-for-8 against Greene’s pitchers.
With the victories, the Trojans (5-5) moved back to the .500 mark and host Hancock today.

G-MU falls twice
RICHFIELD SPRINGS – At the Richfield Springs Tournament Saturday, G-MU dropped games to Remsen (10-6) in its opening contest and fell to Schenevus in the second contest, 14-8.
Garret Shufelt had two hits and two RBI to lead Remsen in the opener, and the Raiders committed eight errors, most of those over the first three innings when Remsen built a 9-5 lead.
Jason Barrows went 3-for-4 in a losing effort, and DeMario Reed pitched four innings of relief striking out seven and not allowing an earned run. “We struggled early in the game making plays, and with the injury to Tim French in our previous game, we have players that are out of position,” said G-MU coach Rick Mohrein. “DeMario did a nice job keeping us in the game, unfortunately, their pitchers did a nice job of keeping my young guys off balance at the plate.”
Schenevus erased a 3-0 G-MU lead building its advantage to 14-3 after five innings in a second-game romp. Dustin Liampo was a perfect 3-for-3 to lead the Dragons, and winning pitcher Dave Vosatha struck out 13.
Barrows, Nate Fuller, and Codi Mabie had two hits apiece for G-MU. “Our pitchers struggled with their control in this game walking 10, and with that many free baserunners, our pitchers made more pitches than they had to,” Mohrein said.
G-MU (3-6) hosts Laurens today.

NORWICH – Norwich bounced back from a shutout loss to Susquehanna Valley on Friday with a non-league rout of Walton Saturday afternoon.
Norwich batted around in the opening inning and the fourth inning in mounting its best offensive numbers of the season.
Shelby Condon was 3-for-5 with three RBI and a solo home run in the third inning. Logan Thompson had two hits and two RBI with a two-run double in the first, Kat DeTomi had two hits, four runs scored, and three RBI, and Jaime Berger had a two-run single in the fourth.
“It was a good team effort with everyone getting hits and scoring,” said Norwich coach Scott Moore. “Especially after the loss to Susquehanna Valley. Walton’s pitchers really had trouble with their control to start the game, and we were able to to come through with big hits.”
Susquehanna Valley chipped away at Norwich over the middle innings scoring three in the third and four more in the fourth to create an 8-0 lead.
Abby Godbout had three hits and four runs scored, Lindsay Haskell went 3-for-4, and Gina Correll drove in two runs to lead the Sabers. “Sus Valley is just a great all-around team in all aspects of the game,” Moore said. “You couldn’t ask for a better coached team.”
Berger logged seven inning striking out 11 and walking six to take the loss. “We knew that if Sus Valley was not the toughest team we face this year, they will at least be the second toughest,” Moore said. “They attempted two or three bunts, but the rest were trying to knock the cover off of the ball.”

Oneonta 9, Greene 6
AFTON – Cassidy Phillips, who pitched Afton to a sectional title win as a seventh-grader two years ago, gave up just two first-run innings Saturday to the Trojans, and also came through with the winning hit in the bottom of the eighth as the Crimson Knights avenged a 6-1 loss to Greene earlier in the week.
Payton Cutting drew a walk to start the eighth and moved to second on a passed ball before coming home on Phillips’ basehit.
After scoring two in the first, Greene’s next-best chance to score came in the sixth inning when it had runners on second and third with one out. Phillips induced a pop-up to Gabby Sherwood, then struck out Kiley Schaff to end the inning.
Phillips finished with seven strikeouts and two walks, while giving up just three hits.
The day did not improve for Greene, who bowed to Oneonta, 9-6, in Saturday’s second game.
Greene closed to within 6-5 in the fifth plating three runs. Laura Durdon and Caitlin Willis singled, and a Rebecca Hanrahan doubled in two runs. Hanrahan came home on a Taylor Ellis double.
Oneonta created some breathing room with three runs in the top of the seventh on Erin Mushtare’s three-run double.
“The whole weekend was about not making plays,” said Greene coach Rick Smith, whose club committed 10 errors in the two games in suffering its first two losses. “We have to tighten up our defense mentally and physically. We have some maturing to do as a team, but we have plenty of time to get there. With solid defense, both games this weekend were winnable.”
