Sheriff’s report breaks down Chenango crimes & calls by the numbers

NORWICH – The demand for public safety services in Chenango County continues to increase, according to a 2011 annual report Sheriff Ernest Cutting delivered to county lawmakers earlier this year. Here are some of the statistics from the report:
In 2011, the Sheriff’s Communications Division took in 113,924 total emergency and non-emergency calls for service in Chenango County, an increase of 10 percent over the previous year. Of those, 33,708 resulted in a law enforcement event and 10,053 were fire and Emergency Management Services calls.
The Dispatch Center is staffed by 11 full-time and six part-time public safety dispatchers. It is also primary dispatch for the New York State Police in Norwich and takes after hours calls for the Norwich Police Department and the Chenango County department of highway, public health, social services and medical examiner.
The Chenango County Law Enforcement Division, consisting of 23 full-time deputies, handled 17,137 complaints and calls for police service, the New York State Police, 9,717; the Greene Police Department,1,700; Norwich City Police, 1,651; the New Berlin Police Department,1,267; the Oxford Police Department, 925; Sherburne Police Department, 655; Afton Police Department, 442; and Bainbridge Police Department, 125.
Law Enforcement Division detectives made 1,131 criminal arrests last year, including 360 felony arrests last year, up by 80 over 2010. There were 533 misdemeanor arrests; 238 violations and miscellaneous arrests and 43 DWIs.
The 2011 Fire/EMA totals included 785 sick persons; 663 calls of breathing problems; 648 falls; 509 chest pain; and 452 trees and wires down.
The 2011 War on Drugs effort resulted in narcotics arrests in 2011, including 42 for unlawful possession of marijuana; 20 for misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance; and 15 arrests for felony criminal possession of a controlled substance.
There were 583 collisions investigated in 2011, including four fatalities. Collisions with deer resulted in six personal injuries and 210 property damages. There were 154 collisions involving other vehicles.
There were fewer domestic incidents investigated in 2011 versus 2010, something Sheriff Cutting said he was particularly pleased to report. Of the 279 incidents, the most calls, 51, came from the Town of Norwich, followed by 24 from the Village of Sherburne; 21 from the Town of Plymouth; and 17 from the Town of Sherburne.
With available grants, the department is in the process of acquiring teleconferencing equipment for the jail, courts and other professional services and recording equipment for all police agencies in Chenango County to record confessions. The department received about $133,000 in federal and state grants last year. However, Sheriff Cutting said he anticipated much less this year.
The Sheriff’s Summer Youth Camp, started in 1996, provided a weekly character building program free of charge to nearly 6,000 children last year.
