DVD Patrol
Let’s get ready, Patrollers! The DVD Patrol has been getting ready for everything Summer Movie related. Not only has the Toddster been doing a review here and there. “The Avengers” is finally here and we will be doing our review next week right here. Also, We have to bid a fond farewell to a friend of the Toddsters’ but more on that later. We’ve got a lot to get to.
New on DVD
Haywire - The fight for truth and justice is never an easy one. Especially when you work in intelligence. Mallory Kane (Gina Carrano) always took the jobs no one else would take. She takes an assignment to save a man in China who has valuable information. She completes the job but finds out later that the people she works for are also dealing with terrorists. Now, she goes on the run and is blamed for killing the man she just saved. Can Mallory find the evidence she needs to clear her name and stop the people she works for? Directed by Steven Soderburgh. Some other DVDd of his include “The Ocean’s” trilogy (Ocean’s Eleven, Ocean’s Twelve, and Ocean’s Thirteen), “The Mexican,” and “Out of Sight.” now on DVD in stores now.
Joyful Noise - It’s never easy when you have two people who want the same thing but disagree on how to get it done. Vi (Queen Latifah) has just been appointed to direct the Church’s choir. Vi thinks that everything with the choir is just fine but GG (Dolly Parton) thinks the choir needs to be updated and it’s time to try new things. At first, the two stubborn ladies don’t really see eye to eye. As time goes by, things start to click and Vi thinks maybe some new ways might not be so bad. Can GG make Vi see the light? Check out a few DVDs of Parton in stores now including “9 to 5,” “Steel Magnolias,” and “Straight Talk.”

Iron Man (Anime) - Cartoon Spotlight has something brand new and something the Toddster doesn’t usually check out. I’m not really a big fan of Japanese Animation (or “Anime” as it’s often referred to). (Hey, It’s Iron Man and I had to take a look). Tony Stark has come to Japan to open one of his “Arc Reactors” which will open up all kinds of energy sources to Japan and the rest of the world. Tony has also created a brand new Iron Man armor and has decided to retire and turn it over to someone else. Things go very wrong when the armor is stolen and a brand new criminal organization called Zodiac has its sights on Japan and Tony’s Iron Man armor. Can he come out of retirement long enough to find what is really going on? This brand new series is now available with a brand version of Wolverine and “The X-me”n also available. I just looked at the whole series and this was absolutely awesome.
Now in Theaters
Safe - Once in a while, heroes have to be reminded of the things that are important. Luke Wright (Jason Statham) was a cop and always took the undercover jobs that no else would take. Eventually, he grew tired of the jobs he had to do and left the force. Luke decided to become a fighter and was a pretty good one until he decided to not throw a fight when his family’s safety depended on it. The Russian mob lost a lot of money on him and made an example of him. With his family gone, Luke has nothing else left to lose. All that changes after he meets a young girl named Mei (Catherine Chan). It seems that Mei has a photographic memory for numbers and can retain everything she sees. Now she goes on the run from the Chinese Mafia, the Russian Mob, and a small faction of NYPD corrupt cops. The only who can help her is Luke. Will Luke be able to get it together and help Mei before it’s too late.
The Toddster’s Take: This was an incredible action movie and Statham does it again. I love a story that doesn’t take a lot of time to get going and this one kept on track. Chan was great at playing off Statham and the two were able to carry this movie without missing a beat. Check this one out!
Before we go, The Patrol has to say goodbye to a special friend of the Toddster’s who recently lost a long battle with cancer. Bill Excell was a good friend of mine and a long standing friend to a lot of people. Bill was also a law enforcement officer with a long career of distinguished service for truth and justice too. I know he has a lot of friends and family that will miss him. The Patrol salutes you and our condolences go out to his family. Bill, we’ll miss you!
