Murray sets another NHS school record; Norwich sweeps REK

NORWICH – At the REK Friends Forever Invitational, Norwich again swept the boys and girls titles Friday, and NHS sophomore Matt Murray topped off his fantastic week setting another school record.
Murray, who set a new school record in the 200-meter dash and was part of the record-breaking 3,200-meter relay at Owego earlier in the week, ran the Tornado’s first sub-50-second 400-meter dash timing 49.1 seconds. Murray added a victory in the 800 meters, the pole vault, and was part of the Tornado’s victorious 1,600-meter relay quartet along with Nate Ashton, Nuri Harper, and Cameron Prime. He was named the top male performer of the meet.
In the nine-team field, Norwich dominated the victory podium taking 13 out of the 18 contested events.
Pat Taylor was a triple winner in individual events landing wins in the 100-meter dash, long jump, and triple jump: John Mooney took the 1,600 meters Jamie Zieno the 3,200 meters; Ashton won the 400-meter hurdles; and the Purple were first in every relay contested.
Norwich’s girls did not win nearly as many events as the NHS boys, but racked up the depth points scoring 153 points to best second-place Sherburne-Earlville (88 points).
NHS’s Morgan Hagenbuch (100 hurdles), Brooke Bonney (shot put), and Sydney Chaffee (400 meters) picked up two total wins winning an individual event, while also taking part in Norwich’s first-place 400-meter relay.
S-E’s Gemma Godfrey (400 hurdles), Emily Palmer (long jump), and Emma Karaman (pole vault) led the Marauders with victories.
