Pink Faith reaches out to women battling breast cancer
AFTON – A new breast cancer awareness group by the name of Pink Faith of Chenango County is taking strides to assist women in the battle against breast cancer and seeking community support for their efforts.
Pink Faith will hold its first “Victory Over Breast Cancer” community fundraiser from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 20 at Vincent’s Italian Restaurant, 164 Main St., Afton. The event includes a baked ziti dinner, salad bar and refreshments, giveaways, basket and cash raffles, and special guest speakers. Cost is $15 per person with all proceeds benefitting the Pink Faith of Chenango County.
The group is also planning the first Pink Faith Breast Cancer Awareness Walk, set to take place at 9 a.m. July 14, at the Afton Fairgrounds. Area sponsors including Binghamton Chrysler-Dodge, NBT, Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Central New York, Lourdes Hospital, and the Chenango Health Network are assisting the organization in its efforts to make an impact in Chenango County.
Thanks to the support of businesses and local organizations in the Afton, Bainbridge and Harpursville area, Pink Faith organizers Tammy Rae Palmetier, Kim Nerzak and Rose Cepero have raised more than $2,000 since February to donate to women being treated for breast cancer. The purpose, they say, is to provide financial assistance to ease the burden of transportation expenses to and from treatment sessions.
“A lot of women don’t go for treatment because they can’t afford it,” explained Cepero.
As breast cancer survivors themselves, Palmetier, Nerzak and Cepero say they understand the financial strain of attending treatment.
The closest breast cancer treatment centers are in Binghamton and Cooperstown. With gas at nearly $4 per gallon, the ladies of Pink Faith estimate that the average cost to attend treatment sessions could be as high as $750 per month – an expense that’s not covered by health insurance companies, they said.
“We are a group designed to help women with some of the financial difficulties ... We don’t want to see women deny themselves treatment because of travel expenses,” said Palmetier.
Over the last few months, the group has undertaken several community events to raise money. An April raffle brought in more than $400 and for months, donations have been collected at participating businesses throughout Chenango County.
“We’ve done pretty well for the short time we’ve been doing this,” said Nerzak. “The community has been really supportive of what we’re trying to do.”
“We’ve set our goals extremely high with the help and support of local communities and business. This is a team effort to save lives,” added Palmetier.
