Hansen Foundation interviews scholarship applicants
OXFORD – With graduation fast approaching, Oxford seniors continue to fill out applications in the hopes of securing scholarships for college.
Last weekend, Oxford alum Christopher Hansen and his wife Jennifer returned to the area to interview five students who are competing for three scholarships.
This is the second year the Hansens have offered the scholarship opportunity, which hands out three awards for $10,000 each.
“All of the students we interviewed this year were very genuinely passionate about school, sports and volunteering,” said Hansen. “It was certainly a tough decision.”
The five finalists answered questions about their goals, ambitions and what shaped them in high school.
Hansen said each student brought an impressive resume with high marks scholastically and a variety of extra-curricular activities that ranged from music and art to almost every sports program.
“We wanted to learn what their biggest challenge in life had been and how it had helped make them a leader,” said Hansen. “We really wanted to find people that could take that leadership role ... everyone we talked to had a strong position and knew it meant providing guidance while also leaving room for personal growth.”
Hansen went on to explain that he had been surprised by how generous the students were with their free time, volunteering for their churches, school committees and soup kitchens.
The Hansens worked with 8th grade biology teacher Jerry Locke to narrow down the eligible students. According to Jennifer Hansen, Locke’s participation helped the couple get an idea for the environment and culture of the school district.
“I knew Chris when he was younger ... he was focused and driven, I’ve been blessed with knowing both Chris and Jenn,” said Locke. “They’re a tremendous team and this is a great program for the kids.”
The winners will be announced at the Oxford Scholarship Award Ceremony on June 6.
