Norwich topples undermanned Johnson City

NORWICH – Norwich’s boys won all but one event Tuesday, and the Tornado girls were nearly as dominant in defeating an abbreviated Johnson City lineup, 107-18 and 92-30 respectively on senior recognition day.
Patrick Taylor, Matt Murray, Nate Ashton, Jamie Zieno, and Kegan Levesque were all multiple event winners on dreary, wet afternoon. Murray, running his first competitive 1,600-meter race, won in 4:39.9 against a limited field that included teammate John Mooney. Murray, just a sophomore, holds the school record in the 200-, 400-, and 800-meter races, and is just 15 seconds shy of the 1,600 record.
Morgan Hagenbuch had four overall victories for the Lady Purple. Also grabbing individual wins were Sarah Spittler, Sydney Chaffee, Shelby Benjamin, and Martha Clemens. Despite the inclement weather, Hagenbuch and Benjamin recorded season-best distances in the triple jump and long jump.
“It was senior day, and we still expected the team to go out and perform,” said Norwich coach Shaun Horan. “It was nice to see the girls have their season-best jumps in the cruddy weather.”
Norwich will compete in the Oneonta Invitational on Friday, and Horan said his team will bring a select lineup to the prestigious Parkhurst Invitational at Vestal on Saturday.
