S-E building project nears completion

SHERBURNE - Sherburne-Earlville Central School District administrators are seeing a light at the end of the tunnel as their $25.2 million, multi-phase capital building project nears completion.
The project should finish up for the most part by the middle of June, with only administrative work remaining, said Ben Heintz, the district’s representative on the job.
SECSD Superintendent Gayle Hellert said the final, Phase III work schedule had been “extended,” but that the work is “almost finished.”
“I’m very pleased that it’s coming to the end and that we will have our access points and wireless connections completed,” she said. “We’ll just be working on odds and ends with punch list type activities.”
At a hearing of the 2012/2013 proposed budget earlier this week, SECSD Board of Education Interim President Tom Morris said the last phase of the project had proceeded “much smoother” than at previous junctures.
A newly-constructed main entrance to the middle/high school auditorium had to be demolished due to problems in design and worksmanship. Hellert said the steps were too short and the slope too steep for pedestrians. Visitors and students should be able to egress the auditorium via a new structure in about a week to 10 days, Heintz said during a presentation to the a large group of district residents who attended the budget meeting.
Plumbing, food service, geothermal well construction and theater construction contracts are currently closing out, with general, electrical and mechanical portions wrapping up. The choral/music room is complete other than flooring, which should be ready for the Sherburne Pageant of Bands competitions, said Heintz.
“By and large the work has been completed on schedule. This is the final phase. They have a very successful and people should be very happy with the end project,” he said.
Nine contractors led by Bearsch Compeau Knudson Architects and Engineers of Binghamton have been on the project, which began with Phase I in 2009. Nearly every area of the original Middle/High School was demolished, reconfigured and refurbished, including the high school offices, the reception area, the school-based health center, and a natatorium with a new pool, wrestling and fitness areas. The entire music education facility was demolished to make way for band, chorus and practice rooms in addition to a lab for electronic keyboards and computer recording equipment. The auditorium has new staging, lighting and sound control booths. The scope of the work involved new heating, ventilation, air conditioning and geothermal systems, including solar panels.
