Emerson honored with boy scouts’ distinguished citizen award
NORTH NORWICH – Thomas Emerson received the 27th annual Distinguished Citizen Award at the Canasawacta Country Club last night.
The mood was light, and laughter filled the air as friends and relatives gathered to celebrate and poke fun of Emerson with amusing anecdotes and fond memories.
The award is presented by the Baden-Powell Council each year to a member of the community who has demonstrated outstanding citizenship and made a significant contribution to the betterment of Chenango County.
Emerson’s children Nathaniel and Katherine MC’d the event, making gentle jabs at their father while presenting various friends who shared memories of the Oxford resident and Norwich-based attorney.
Bruce Erath fondly recalled a time that Emerson left him holding the bill, but also described his long-time friend as “someone you can count on always, and a number you can dial at your lowest point and he’ll still pick up.
Emerson was described as a hard-working lawyer, an avid member of the community, and above all else, a family man.
“Bro, I think you really deserve this, you’re the best brother I’ve ever had,” said David Emerson of his only brother.
Roger Hoyt, scout executive, who presented the award, said Emerson exemplified the Scout Oath by doing duty to God and country, helping others at all times, and keeping himself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.
“I’ve always tried to do the right thing, but honestly my good fortune in life is the result of others ... my office staff, family,” said Emerson. “Life is all about choices, and the best choice I’ve made was asking my wife Bonnie to marry me.”
The night concluded with a final thanks by Emerson before the 300 guests made their way to the front to congratulate the Distinguished Citizen of the Year.
