Norwich golfers win first section title in 17 years
Evening Sun Report
MARATHON – On the heels of the Norwich tennis team’s first section title in two decades, the Purple Tornado golf team captured its first Section IV Class B title since the 1995 season rolling to a 35-stroke victory over runner-up Susquehanna Valley, Monday at Maple Hill Golf Club in Marathon.
The Class B and Class C tournaments ran concurrently, and the Tornado’s five-person score of 429 was the lowest overall team score. Eric Walling, the lone senior in Norwich’s starting lineup, shared co-medalist honors with an 80 over the tough par-70 layout. “I think some of the kids struggled with the greens. They’re pretty tricky,” said Norwich coach Bob Branham. “Most of the kids’ scores were where we expected them to be.”
Juniors Ryan Hagen and Ricky Runyon tied for fourth shooting matching 84s; Corey Johnson had an 88; and Casey Marson shot a 93. Marson rolled in a 40-foot birdie putt on the par-three 16th hole to highlight her round. Ryan Johnson, whose 94 was one stroke behind Marson and did not count toward the final score, also had a highlight-reel moment knocking in a 100-yard shot on the par-four 11th hole for a birdie.
Norwich returns five of its six players next season with Hagen, Runyon, and Marson soon-to-be seniors. “We have a real solid group coming back, and I think they have to be excited and confident (about next season),” Branham said.
Walling continues his season later this month in the state tournament as a member of Section IV’s medalist team.
Class B Team scores: Norwich, 429; Sus Valley, 464; Owego 473; Dryden, 477.
