Legion unveiling new flag set up on Memorial Day
NORWICH – The Norwich American Legion Post 189 will unveil its new flag set-up on Memorial Day following the parade and West Park ceremony.
The parade will begin at 10 a.m. Monday on East Main Street and will conclude in West Park in Norwich. There will be memorial services for members of the armed services who gave and risked their lives in combat.
A 21-gun salute will precede a wreath hanging in honor of the fallen soldiers. Chief Joseph Angelino will be this year’s guest speaker.
“It’s a really special time,” said Post Commander Christopher Thompson. “It’s about vets helping vets and taking care of each other.”
Following the ceremony there will be a light luncheon at Post 189 on Sheldon Street, where legion members will display the three new flag poles and a soldier silhouette.
“It started off that we were just going to get the center pole and slowly grew from there,” said President Paul Russo. “We asked ‘how can we make it better?’ and we started checking into it.”
Thompson explained that – through donations from NBT Bank – they were able to purchase the center pole, which allowed the post to purchase the two flanking flagpoles.
Ride Captain Alex Danyluk, Jr. suggested the addition of a soldier silhouette which he said adds a lot to the monument.
“We were able to make it happen thanks to NBT and members who volunteered their time,” said Thompson.
The luncheon and unveiling will be open to the public.
Finally, the post will have a Flag Burning Ceremony at 6 p.m., where they will dispose of any damaged or retired flags “in a dignified way.” Anyone with a flag to be disposed can bring it to the legion post before Monday.
