B-G offers counseling after boy’s tragic death

BAINBRIDGE – Funeral services for a fourth grader who fell from a Memorial Day parade float on Monday will be held later this week, and counselors at his school are offering grief support in the aftermath of the tragedy.
Teddy Cherniak, 10, of Bainbridge, was riding with members of his baseball team on the team’s float when the accident occurred, according to a number of sources. Reports say when the float stopped suddenly, the young boy fell over the side.
The accident took place at approximately 11:20 a.m., shortly after the town’s parade. He reportedly died later that afternoon at the Wilson Medical Center in Binghamton.
Cherniak was a fourth grader at the Greenlawn Elementary School in Bainbridge, who participated in a number of sports, choir and played trumpet with the school band, according to his obituary, which goes on to state that he “loved sports and was an avid participant in baseball, basketball and soccer.”
In a prepared statement, Bainbridge-Guilford Central School Superintendent Don Wheeler said, “The tragic loss of Teddy Cherniak is devastating for the Bainbridge-Guilford community. An accident of this magnitude gives every parent pause and I know I speak for the Board of Education and all of our staff when I say that our heart goes out to Teddy’s family and friends. It will be important for all of us to pull together and support those who will deeply feel the loss of a fine young man.”
The school is offering counseling as needed for its students following Monday’s accident and will continue to do so throughout the week and as long as the service is deemed necessary, added Wheeler. Neighboring districts have also pitched in, with counselors from the Norwich, Sidney and Greene school districts, in addition to BOCES, volunteering to help out.
The Village of Bainbridge Police Department will not be releasing any further details, out of respect for the young boy’s parents and family, although an ongoing investigation has been reported by several sources. Village Mayor Phillip Darling and Fire Chief Kyle Simpkin have not returned phone calls seeking comment.
Calling hours for Theodore will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church of Bainbridge, 27 North Main St., with Pastor Gary Kubitz, officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Teddy’s name may be directed to the Bainbridge-Guilford Booster Club, c/o Christine Smith, 2 Linda Lane, Bainbridge, NY 13733, the Bainbridge Emergency Squad, 22 West Main St., Bainbridge, the Guilford Emergency Squad, Mechanic Street, Guilford, NY 13780 or to the United Methodist Church of Bainbridge, 27 North Main St., Bainbridge.
Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.landersfh.com.
