Greater Chenango Aquatics Team to host Swim-A-Thon
NORWICH – The Greater Chenango Aquatics Team will host its first official Swim-a-Thon on June 29 at the Norwich High School to raise money to support the Greater Chenango Gators.
The swimmers will have two hours to swim a maximum of 200 laps for which donors are encouraged to pledge money for each length completed.
All of the money raised will go towards purchasing new equipment and swimsuits, providing scholarships for the members, and covering swim meet costs and travel expenses.
Additionally, 5 percent of the money raised will be donated to the USA Swimming Foundation, which promotes swim programs for children and young adults across the country and gives financial aid to members of the U.S. National Team.
The Greater Chenango Gators began in April through the efforts of Head Coach Saundra Gantt and volunteers interested in promoting the sport in Chenango County.
“It’s a great way to be healthy and active while having fun and learning the importance of team work,” said Gantt. “The kids have fun and we want it to help bring back swimming activities in the area.”
There are currently 38 swimmers, boys and girls, 5-21 years old. The team meets three days a week at the Norwich High School pool and two days at the Greene High School pool which Gantt said, “gives kids from all over the county, north and south, a chance to make some of the practices.”
The team is comprised of swimmers from Norwich, Oxford, Greene, Chenango Forks, Bainbridge and Guilford.
The Gators team is a part of the Adirondack Region which currently boasts 2,000 swimmers. The team had a chance to test their skills at the first meet of the season over the weekend at the Niskayuna High School near Albany.
Through the efforts of parent and teacher volunteers, all of the equipment, swimsuits and caps have been purchased through registration costs and fundraisers.
