Norwich’s Murray, Bonney place at state track and field meet
CICERO – A pair of Norwich sophomores placed at the New York State Division II Track and Field Meet, this past weekend at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
Record-breaker Matt Murray placed second in the D-2 400-meter dash with the second-best time of his career timing 49.59. Murray was the lone underclassman in the finals, and fell half a second short of Section I’s Kevin Hunter of Pawling. With two years left in his varsity career, Murray is already the school record-holder in the 200-, 400-, and 800-meter distances, and is also part of two record-breaking relays.
“I think Matt has a real good shot the next two years in a few events,” said Norwich coach Shaun Horan. “It will be tough to decide what to put him in, but it’s a good problem to have.”
Murray improved on his best times throughout the season, and although he fell short, Horan says he expects more improvement in the next two years. “He’s disappointed he didn’t win, and he wanted to get into the Federation finals,” Horan said of his sophomore standout. “For him to get second is pretty nice, and we really couldn’t ask for much more.”
Brooke Bonney, also a sophomore, finished sixth in the state in the shot put in her first year of track and field. The number 16 seed, Bonney surpassed her personal-best throw by nearly half a foot, and vaulted by 10 other higher-seeded competitors to finish on the awards podium.
“She was just phenomenal this year,” Horan said. “She got along famously with our throwing coach, Tom Stoddard, and it’s incredible what she has done in her first year.”
Norwich’s Pat Taylor was eighth in the D-2 long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 3 inches, and the 3,200-meter relay team of Murray, Jamie Zieno, Nuri Harper, and Nate Ashton re-broke its own record timing 8:02.97 to place eighth in division two. The NHS foursome lowered a near 30-year-old record 24 seconds over the course of the 2012 season continually bettering its own mark. “Those guys didn’t just break the record, they totally wiped it off the board,” Horan said.
All four runners ran at or better than their personal-best splits to lower their own school record another three seconds from the previous-best time.
Elsewhere, B-G/Afton senior Connor Fuller and Bears freshman Julia Knapp each finished fourth to lead their club. Fuller ran to a fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase clocking 9:24.62, and Knapp was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles timing 16.02. Knapp was also seventh in the 400-meter hurdles hitting the finish line in 1:06.66.
