OHS presents “East Side, East Side” Tuesday
OXFORD – Tuesday, June 12 at 7 p.m., the Oxford Historical Society (OHS) is presenting “East Side, East Side” in the Community Room of the Oxford Memorial Library. Due to the current Main Street Bridge construction, the redirection of traffic to the east side of the Village has drawn the OHS’ attention to an area that might be overlooked today. After a short business meeting, OHS guest speakers will accurately detail the ‘less notable’ section of the east side, back when it was in its heyday. Employing vivid stories and images, this program will forever change the way you see it!
Most people know the beautiful Washington Park with its majestic, historic homes, but what of Merchant Street and south? This is ‘the other’ East Side. Who owned the feed mill? Where were the huge coal bins; and the sawmill? How many trains a day stopped there and was there really a stockyard? How big was Borden’s? Street by street the answers will be recalled. The sounds, the smells, the bustle that was once a very active part of town will be brought accurately to mind. Photographs, maps and a knowledgeable panel of “seasoned” Eastsiders will make this an enlightening and enjoyable evening.
