Donna Frech Studio presents ‘The Dash’ recital
NORWICH – The Donna Frech School of Dance will put on its annual recital this weekend at the Norwich High School.
There will be evening performances at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and matinees at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday in the auditorium.
The recital is called “The Dash” and is a reference to a poem in which the author believes birth and death do not matter. Instead, it is the dash between those two moments and everything that we as human beings do in between that is important.
“It’s about the impact we make on other’s lives and the world,” said Frech, who has operated the studio in Norwch, Sidney and New Berlin for 37 years. “Whatever happens is up to you and you can make a difference.”
Each of the dances are based upon the lives of historic figures that made an especially large impact during their lives.
For example, a performance revolving around the life of Abraham Lincoln is denoted by 1817-1865 – note the dash between the dates.
Each song is either by a famous composer or about a significant event. For example, “Requiem for a Tower” is an ode to the 9/11 tragedy and the firefighters who made such a difference that day.
The recital will feature tap, ballet, jazz, and every other form of traditional dance, said Frech.
The evening performances will feature older students and the matinees will feature the younger, with some dances from the evening show.
Frech currently has five teachers working with her at the studio, teaching more than 200 students ranging in age from 3-73.
“All of my teachers right now grew up in this studio, went to college, even taught at other studios and schools,” said Frech. “They’ve come back and are teaching for me ... it’s a wonderful experience.”
This year the show will feature two graduating seniors, Gabby Blenis and Trista Dockstader, who will perform a “farewell piece” with their teachers and a few fellow students.
“It’s a nice send-off for the girls with some of the students that they have grown up with in the studio,” said Frech.
Tickets for the performances will be $10 and are available at Service Pharmacy in Norwich, New Berlin and Sherburne, Bartle’s Pharmacy in Oxford, Video Entertainment Plus in Sidney, and the Donna Frech Dance Studio.
Tickets will also be available at the door before each performance, although Frech warned that they sell out quickly.
“The dancers worked really hard this year ... they get so excited about performing that they shine on stage,” said Frech. “They love doing this and they’ve really improved with hard work.”
