Chenango to celebrate Wine Festival this weekend

NORWICH – Hundreds of local wine connoisseurs are expected to take to the Chenango County Fairgrounds from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday to sample and purchase the products of several of New York’s best wineries during the first Chenango Wine Festival.
The event – sponsored by Upstate Wine Country of Pennsylvania – features eight New York State wineries from six different counties: Black Bear Winer of Chenango Co.; Glenora Wine Cellars of Yates Co.; Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards of Schuler Co.; Inspire Moore Winery and Vineyard of Ontario Co.; Magpie Farms of Chenango Co.; Thousand Islands Winery of Jefferson Co.; and Venditti Vineyards of Jefferson Co.
“We are featuring some of the closest (wineries) to Norwich as well as the Finger Lakes, Thousand Islands and other parts of the state,” explained Dan Tompkins, founder and partner for Upstate Wine Country.
Joining the wineries will be Fred’s Inn and Park Place with a clambake, and international foods will be offered by the Lions Club of Oxford, Nina’s Pizzeria, and Tuller’s Catering.
“While the wine tasting booths are the centerpiece of our event, they are far from the only thing at our event,” said Tompkins.
More than 30 different vendors will be selling handcrafted jewelry, soaps, ice cream, woodcrafts and wine accessories, among other unique items from different area merchants.
The gala also includes live musical performances from two bands: The High Falls Duo and Jes & Mike.
Similar wine festivals have been held in the northeastern parts of Pennsylvania in the past and over time, Upstate Wine Country grew in popularity and turned its attention to rural areas of New York. Only two New York locations were chosen by the company for wine festivals this year: Greek Peak of Cortland County and the Chenango County Fairgrounds.
“We are looking at other locations, but resorts and fairgrounds tend to be very welcoming toward us,” Tompkins said. “We loved the way we were greeted at the Chenango County Fairgrounds ... They were very anxious to see more things happening at the fairgrounds; I’m hoping that we can play a small part in having more happen.”
Advance tickets can be purchased at Commerce Chenango, Fred’s Inn Restaurant and Lodging, the Northeast Classic Car Museum, Park Place Restaurant, or online at upstatewinecountry.com until the end of the business day Friday. Tickets are also available at the gate on the day of the event.
