OFC helping Chenango residents beat the heat

NORWICH – Thanks to funding from the New York State Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Opportunities for Chenango is granting qualifying residents an air conditioner to help battle the summer’s extraordinary heat.
Quaranta Housing Services – the housing assistance program of OFC – announced that funding for air conditioners is available to county residents with a low income and with chronic or acute medical conditions. New York set aside $3 million in funding for the program, which was made available to all 62 counties in the state earlier this month.
To qualify, residents must meet specific criteria, which includes: Meeting LIHEAP low-income guidelines (the annual income to qualify for a four-person household is $49,500); having at least one household member who has been diagnosed with a chronic or acute medical condition that is aggravated by exposure to extreme heat; and a doctor providing written documentation – dated within six months – that air conditioning assistance is critical to prevent a heat emergency.
“The late spring and early summer have already brought several heat waves, which can be life and death matters for New Yorkers with serious medical conditions,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo in a written statement earlier this month. “Senior citizens are especially susceptible to heat related illness and this
initiative will provide low-income homes with much needed air conditioners so that New Yorkers have the assistance they need to stay cool and healthy.”
Households that have a working air conditioner or have received one from the state in the last ten years are not eligible and grants do not cover the additional costs of operation for an air conditioner.
Similar annual grants have been made available to different Chenango County nonprofit agencies in the past. According to Quaranta Housing Services, several inquiries for cooling systems have been received from Chenango residents over the last few weeks and with the recent heat wave, many more have taken an interest. Quaranta will use grant funds to purchase and install the air conditioners in the homes of qualifying residents.
