17th Gus Macker another slam-dunk for Chenango

NORWICH – The Norwich Family Y 3-on-3 Gus Macker Tournament came to a close yesterday and according to Macker director Tom Revoir, it was another successful year gone by without a hitch.
Despite last week’s overwhelming heat and moments of heavy rain forecasted Saturday, more than 400 teams still took to the courts on East Main Street over the weekend, pitting some of the area’s best basketball players with players who traveled from well outside Chenango County. In all, more than 1,700 players of all ages from all over competed in this year’s tournament, with thousands more watching from the sidelines.
Nearly 400 volunteers helped out over the weekend, taking on roles in everything from planning and setting up courts, to clean-up and dismantling basketball hoops.
The slam dunk contest – often a favorite during the tournament – brought out hundreds of spectators, regardless of spotty rain showers, said Revoir, and Sunday’s final championship games saw a face-off between local and visiting players.
Said Revoir, “I’m very pleased with this year’s tournament. It went very well and issue free. Everyone had a great time, young and old.”
