Veterans hit the road for specialized end of life care

NORWICH – Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines for the First We Honor Veterans’ motorcycle ride to benefit Hospice. The money raised will be allocated to provide services to Veterans who reside in Chenango County and opt for Hospice care. For the past year Hospice of Chenango County staff has been educated about the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs that may be specific to Veterans as they approach their final days, weeks, or months of life. “We are now on a mission to learn how to serve Veterans through the challenges they may be facing from illness, isolation or traumatic life experience,” says agency Clinical Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator Kendall Drexler.
The We Honor Veterans’ ride was spearheaded by members of The American Legion Post 189 in Norwich, as well as The American Legion Riders. The event will take place on Saturday, August 11 and is open to any rider and passenger for a fee of $10 per person. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. at The Vet’s Home on County Route 32 in Oxford. A blessing of the bikes, and kick stands up will be at 11.
The leisurely scenic ride will wind through beautiful Chenango Ccounty and include five stops where finger food and water will be provided. A big party at the end of the ride is planned for 4 p.m. at The American Legion Post 189 at 29 Sheldon Street in Norwich. Riders and passengers will be treated to a pasta dinner and dessert and a deejay will be on hand for entertainment and dancing. However, even if you don’t ride the Veterans encourage the general public to plan on attending the after party at the Norwich Legion. Those who RSVP by Friday, Aug. 3 will pay just $10 a person, or you can pay $12 at the door on Aug. 11.
“The American Legion was happy to work with Hospice putting this fundraiser together,” says Chris Thompson the Commander of the American Legion Post 189. “Veterans have given so much to their fellow countrymen, and sacrificed so much. All the money raised at this event will help Veterans be more comfortable at the end of life.” For more information about the event contact The American Legion Post 189 at 334-9414. If you know of a Veteran who could benefit from Hospice services call Hospice of Chenango County at 334-3556.
