Letter to the Editor: White Store, Evergreen are symbols of the past
Editor,
In this day of computers, iPhones, and other technical devices that lead us in the swift movement of our lives, I feel that there could be a tendency to lose track of the symbols of the past.
Two of these symbols are the White Store Church and the adjacent Evergreen Cemetery located on Rt. 8 between South New Berlin and Mt. Upton. The church was built in 1820 and for most part, is in a good state of preservation, thanks to the diligence of all the former trustees.
The church survives on the gifts of interested people and the donations received from the three events held during the summer, The events consist of an ice cream social, a pie social, and a pork roast. The first two events are preceded by services led by guest pastors and the pork roast generally follws a hymn sing.
During the socials and the pork roast, there is some form of entertainment such as, The Claddagh Ring Irish Dancers, and other groups of instrumentalists or singers.
Unfortunately, the first two events, have passed but the pork roast on Sept. 16 still remains.
It is our hope that your readers will be able to attend these events and help us continue the maintenance and preservation of the White Store Church and the Evergreen Cemetery. For comfort and convenience, it would be wise for attendees to bring lawn chairs for the outdoor events.
The annual meeting for the church will be at 1 p.m., Sept. 9, at the Church.
