51st annual Youth Days underway in New Berlin

NEW BERLIN – The 51st annual Youth Days celebration is already well underway in the Village of New Berlin. Festivities officially kicked-off Thursday and continue throughout the weekend on the grounds of Milford Academy before the carnival pulls out of town for another year on Sunday.
According to event coordinators, this long-lasting end of summer bash has been a great opportunity to pull the community together and simply celebrate the art of being a kid. This year will bring back some of the best-loved traditions and a few others not seen at Youth Days in years, explained Youth Days Committee President Larissa Hanslmaier.
“This is definitely a great community event that everyone really enjoys,” Hanslmaier said. “It’s full of activities that the kids can participate in that aren’t going to cost them anything.”
Following Thursday night’s Miss Youth Day Pageant at the Unadilla Valley Central School, the high spirits of all things summer continues today at 1 p.m. when kids of all ages put their aquatic skills to the test for the sand and water games at Millbrook Reservoir. Games are followed by a watermelon eating contest at 5 p.m. at the New Berlin Fire House and the fun really picks up when the midway opens for the first time at 6 tonight.
“There’s very few towns that have a carnival anymore,” noted Hanslmaier. “Everything is going to be right in one area so people can participate in everything.”
Tonight rounds out with live entertainment featuring the Beadle Brothers by the midway and a fireworks extravaganza after the sun goes down at 9:30 p.m.
Things pick up again on Saturday, when the kids 5K run/walk heads to the start line at 8:30 a.m., immediately followed by the start of the Unadilla River run/walk at 9 in the parking lot of Preferred Mutual. Throughout the day, fun activities including bingo, cookie decorating, scavenger hunts by the food booths, and hands-on fire truck and ambulance demonstrations at the fire house will provide plenty for kids to do until the midway opens from 1-4 p.m. Saturday evening ushers in the annual Youth Day Parade, which steps off at 6 p.m. before the midway reopens at 6:30. After the parade, a live performance by local vocalist Kaitlyn Jackson takes center stage next to the midway and throughout the day, food booths will again be open for the traditional carnival grub.
“All the money we collect over the course of the weekend is all going toward the use of the playground,” explained Hanslmaier. “We’ve tried to turn it in to something where we can give back to the community. We’re really trying to support organizations in the town as well.”
On Sunday, things slowly begin to wind down. Once again, food booths will open at 10 a.m. The midway lights up again from noon until 4 p.m. and for the first time in years, a cruise-in will take to the parking lot of NBT Bank, returning an old-time favorite to Youth Days, said Hanslmaier. And all the while, music – courtesy of Tune Times DJ Entertainment – will keep the good times rolling.
The day comes to a close with a drawing for the free bike giveaways. Winners must be present to win and free tickets are available with the donation of a non-perishable food item.
Said New Berlin Mayer Terry Potter, “This has always been a great event where the community comes together.” Potter, who has four children of his own, joins in the festivities every year. “As [kids] start to see some of the carnival items coming in, they get even more excited ... We’re very appreciative and thank everyone involved in it.”
