Local singer to show off talent at the state fair
NORWICH – After a prize-winning performance at the Chenango County Fair, local singer Shannon Stark has shown she has what it takes to take her act to a bigger stage and this weekend, she has the chance to do just that as she heads to Syracuse to compete in a statewide talent show during New York State Fair.
Stark, 19, will take her act to center stage at 2 p.m. on Sunday, singing in front of hundreds of unfamiliar faces. Her vocal performance of country music superstar LeAnn Rimes’ “Cowboy Sweetheart” won over judges during the Chenango County Fair talent show two weeks ago, earning her first place in the 14 and older age group and the opportunity to move on to more rigid competition at the state level.
“I’m feeling really confident about it,” Stark said, remembering her win at the county fair. “I learned to sing a great new song that everybody loves and it went really well.” And although nerves might get the best of some singers, she said she’s carrying her sense of optimism with her to the state fair.
“I get up on the stage and it really doesn’t phase me,” she said. “It’s more nerve wracking to talk to people than it is to sing to people. When I really get into the song and show everybody that I’m just having fun, it helps make me not so nervous. It shows a better outlook.”
While still young, Stark is no stranger to the big stage. Hours of singing along with online music downloads and performing in front of friends and family members have paid off, she said. Earlier this year, Stark took part in stage competitions at the Otsego County Fair and was previously a contestant for Oneonta Junior Idol in Oneonta. Moreover, local gigs including a performance during the annual Norwich Pumpkin Festival last year bolstered her confidence and encouraged her to press on. She earned a spot in the state fair talent show in 2010 as well, but didn’t make it to the semi-final competition. Hopes are to outdo the competition this time around, she said.
Stark will be performing in the same age group during the state fair competition and under talent show regulations, she must perform the same act that won her first place at the Chenango County Fair. If she performs well on Sunday, it gives her a chance to continue in the semi-final talent show competition on Monday, with a shot of winning a blue ribbon, the $500 grand prize, and bragging rights of being one of the most talented individuals in the state.
